Science Departments at Dickinson versus Muhlenberg, and Northeastern?

My daughter has been accepted to Dickinson, Northeastern, and has been invited to apply to the Dana Scholars Program at Muhlenberg (although not officially accepted yet). She is interested in earning a bachelor's degree in Biology or Biochemistry. How would you compare their science departments?

muhlenebrg is the little engine that could. dickinson is a very good school. northeastern is a very big school in a big city.
muhlenberg and dickinson will give you the all around college experience.
IMO muhlenberg would be my numero uno, 2nd dickinson and save boston for grad school.

Thanks for your advice. I have an older daughter graduating from Muhlenberg. Overall, we were happy with Muhenberg, but it is difficult for science majors to study abroad. We like the Dickinson-sponsored study abroad programs for science majors & a 20,000 addition is currently being built onto the Rector Science Compex at Dickinson. My daughter is interested in going to graduate school in forensic science, but wants to make sure she has a strong undergraduate education in the sciences to get into graduate school. However, my daughter also wants a strong liberal arts foundation and to enjoy campus life. Any other thoughts?

Can only speak to Dickinson, but my son and I were VERY impressed on our campus visit…of the three schools that you mention, I think that Dickinson probably has the best “liberal arts” reputation, although my son’s school sends good kids to Muhlenberg, and I am sure that will be a quality education experience as well.

The other strength that Dickinson has is their study abroad program - it has been around for a long time, it is very high-quality, and it is very integrated within the overall experience there…it was the primary reason it was on his short list. The main issue my son had with Dickinson was Carlisle - not the greatest college town in his view, and probably not the greatest place for internship opportunities (and this is where Northeastern’s location and co-op programs shine).

Good luck!

I would tend to agree with zobroward, Muhlenberg and Dickinson are more traditional LACS. I found Carlisle, Pa a little isolated. Muhlenberg is closer to both NYC and Philadelphia. Carlisle isn’t close to either. Both have good science departments. Dickinson is getting a new president this summer, it should be interesting to see how she does. Best of luck!
