Science

How is the science department at Emory? I am interested in majoring in chem and minoring in either CS, physics, or bio. Is Emory considered a top school in these fields? What are classes and professors like?

Emory is well known for excellence in chemistry and biology and, consequently, for excellence in pre-med. A commonly held belief on campus is that chemistry and biology are two of the most rigorous majors (right there w/ NBB). Many incoming freshman are interested in pre-med, but a large number will be weeded out by the challenging chemistry courses here. (such as organic chemistry and to some extent intro to chemistry/biology) A professor here, all-be-it one in the humanities department, said that roughly half of the incoming freshman that are interested in pre-med will be weeded out. In short, Emory is a great college for pre-med, with literally top notch facilities and resources, but pre-med is a daunting challenge.

I'm not sure about physics and CS; from personal experience it seems these majors do not have as heavy of a presence, and therefore I assume they are relatively less difficult.

By the way, the Biology department here does not have a minor program, just a major program.

Do you have any inside info on the math department?

lol i've been wondeirng the same thing...

no sorry
:-X

Blaze, what do you plan on majoring in?

Truly undecided

If you want CS, you should cross register with GATech.

chemistry and bio are hardcore here. i'm a freshman and taking both organic chem and bio right now. They discourage you from taking biology if you are not planning on pursuing a career/graduate education in something science related. the organic teacher is really awesome, though they say the class is really tough too. my major is chemistry and i'm premed. if you like to learn and study the sciences, emory is a great place to be

^That sounds pretty intense. Are you taking a math course also? Is the Biology the same thing as AP or more difficult? Also, can you tell yet if taking Orgo and Bio at the same time was a good idea?

yeah sciences at emory are top-notch. last yr i took bio and gen chem and it is doable...this yr is definitely harder.

i had AP bio last year as a senior and i can tell you that bio here is much more in depth than your standard AP course. it definetly helps to have had AP but it won't be a breeze for you because of it.

Thanks amadani. What other classes are you taking?

i have bio 141, anthro 101, history of western philosophy, and and anthro seminar. i really enjoy my schedule. it's interesting how some of the courses overlap.
