what is scientology? My friend (junior) currently tutors at a place where they try to eradicate illiteracy through using works by L.Ron Hubbard. Should he quit? Because i did a little research and found a lot of people hate scientology. SO should i tell my fjriend, who love to volunteer at the place where scientology is used to help illiterate people, to quit because it will make his application look bad?

Scientology is the Pentacostal/Southern Baptist type crazy religion of the super elite.

^ so should he continue volunteering at a place where they use L. Ron Hubbard (the creator of scientology) 's book to help the illiterate.

joev

With all due respect, you need to learn a lot more before you equate scientology with any type of baptist or pentecostal, or any other Christian branch. Without getting into the details, neither of those groups would welcome that comparison. My advice is don't say something like this around people who are informed unless you do it anonymously.

alright.. scientology..did a little research. its a religion which suprised me..i thought it was some kind of study of science or something. haha..anyways...so helps "eradicate" illiteracy using L. Ron Hubbard's books...tell him to go for it. I'm guess there is a little bit of religion involved in their teaching, but who cares...if it helps the illiterate people have a opportunity to read and write, tell him to continue. should look pretty good on his college app. i guess.

^ alright....any other comments on what i should advise my friend?

If your friend loves to do this, and is uncertain whether Scientology would be viewed positively or negatively on his application, I suggest he has no reason to identify Scientology on his app. If he is listing the literacy volunteering on his ECs, he can do just that, eg, literacy tutor/volunteer , x hrs/wk, 10th, 11th, 12th grade. This part of the app is usually just a grid anyway.

If he wants to build an essay around his activity, he can do so without mentioning Scientology either.

I believe you are wise to wonder how it might be viewed. Scientology is respected by some and not by others. The earlier poster who called it a "crazy" religion is not the only one who would see it that way. Others consider it a "cult." Some very respected people, imho, belong to Scientology. But there is no reason it should be a part of your friend's college app. Even if it were his religion, there is no place on a college app where you are required to id your religious affiliation.

Scientology is a cult. Read about this so-called religion's founding principles and basic tenets; you will be shocked to learn about the kind of idiocy that many people (including celebs like Tom Cruise) believe in and propagate. Tell your friend to get away from the scientologists and, if he wishes to continue helping children gain literacy, to do so through legitimate channels (i.e. real churches, community centers, after school programs, etc.) HTH.

dadx: I didn't mean to badmouth Southern Baptists or Pentacostals, my only implication was that Scientology is a religion that has beliefs that are "out there" like some people think of SB and PC beliefs.

well...he is Catholic first of all.
he currently tutors children at a library, however, he felt that in L.A, since lots of people live in L.A who have a shaky command of english, he must help people learn how to read and write better so they can succeed. He told me this during lunch where he looked up the organizaton and found that even though its main focus was to detroy illiteracy, the study techniques were created by L.Ron Hubbard, the creator of this scientology. He was afraid that even though he was helping people, he thought that if he put in his aplication that most of his community service hours and volunteering came from the organization, his chances would be lowered. Yea, just trying to help a old buddy. His main concern is that if he mentions the volunteering organization, admission people will automatically know that they use books made my the creator of scientology and his chances will dimish drastically.

any more comments ^

contrarian here;

I don't think it's "bad" for application at all. It is an odd and unique activity and he's doing it for an altruistic reason.

essay idea:
finding the one grain of goodness within scientology-- kid began unwittingly, found out connection to scientology and balked, then kept on because the help he was giving to people outweighed all the negative L-Ron BS.

From what it looks like your friend is a tool of this church/cult. Sure he may be helping to eradicate illiteracy, but the purpose of using the books of this Hubbard guy is to convert people. Even if he thinks people are benefitting from the program, he should still quit it because the program is being dishonest. He should channel his energies into a more legit organization. However, the fact that he's worrying about this whole thing because he's worried it will make his app looks bad leads me to believe that he doesn't care so much about the programs as the community service hours that he's getting from it.

Good point, theo. Helping people is great, but if you're only doing it to make yourself look better, it's pretty shallow.

Scientology is best spelled as "$cientology."

It's a total scam.

joev

Understand. Most religions have some beliefs that others think are "out there".

They in fact would be out there if we didn't believe them to be the truth. :)

Scientology is one of the more pushy religions in the area of helping others for its own good (see illiterate or tsunami relief for examples of the spread of scientology propaganda). It is frightening to see the more prominent people in places of entertainment turn to cults like Kabbalah and scientology for spiritual aid. But I agree on helping people b/c you want to. Also if writing an essay, it doesn't have to mention the scientology aspect.

I know nothing about it except that everyone has something against it and you can't find an unbiased website on it. The fact is, Tom Cruise is a cool dude and Scientology can't be that bad if you look into it with a straight head on your shoulders. Can't be any more crazy than, well, any other religion.

would some elite schools actually appreciate something like this . . .

hey,
we have a national chess champion, a world class juggler, and a scientologist!
(not meant to be offensive)

well they kind of hate psychology. like don't believe in it. I think that's highly illogical. Sorry that's just for starters.
