Just a bit?

The first thing that I saw when I started skimming this essay:

Really? How could the title have been more obvious? Jesus, if you had an English teacher as the reader on this essay, that person would have the idea that you were a numbskull (that’s putting it lightly, BTW) for the rest of the essay–which isn’t good at all.

Suleyman, I doubt you’ll take my opinion to heart, so I’ll keep it short so as not to waste my time. Grammar and diction errors are found throughout the essay. The only redeeming factor in this essay is a very strong, explicit thesis. Even the high-level vocab words you use seem forced at least half the time. I’d give it a 4. If I were an English professor, I’d give it a 3.

Yeah, I just ignored the fact that he never actually identified the novel correctly as Emma, instead making it seem as if the title of the work is 1815. Just another glaring error. This is probably a ■■■■■, surely no one is this delusional.

The unfortunate thing is, I don’t think Suleyman is a ■■■■■. Just defensive. Really, really defensive.

Isn’t it true that the College Board will almost certainly give you a 12 as long as you fill both pages, have a strong thesis, and have 3 examples that support it(even if they’re made up)?

^If you can do all 3 things well/properly/correctly, a 10+ is almost guaranteed. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that those three things=12, though.

So, what is the difference between a 10 and a 12 in practice(not in theory)?

3 major differences between a 10 and 12 (still kinda theoretical):

Amount of high-level vocab (that isn’t forced)

Innate relevance of examples to thesis

How well you tie in your examples to your thesis (for a 12, you’re gonna want to force feed a strong connection down the readers’ throats; keep pointing out connections throughout the essay)

Hmm, so that’s everything recommended in the “How to write a 12 essay in 10 days” thread except the advanced vocab. Do the readers, which only get 1-2 mins to red the essay, actually take that into account?

Well, since the graders are basically skimming the essay, a high-level word will catch their eye. In all likelihood, the grader will go back to the beginning of the sentence and read the sentence to see if you used the high-level word correctly in context. If you did, that’s going to give the reader a good impression of you for sure.

Considering you had only 25 minutes to write an essay, this is a solid 9.
Pros:
Impressive use of vocabulary
Specific evidence
Quotes
Your point is straight and clear (not wishy-washy)
Cons:
Impressive use of vocabulary- now you may be wondering, what the heck is wrong with this guy? Well, the problem is that your use of vocabulary got to the point where it takes away from the essay rather than adding onto it. You have to realize the graders are highly stressed from reading hundreds of paper, and adding in impressive vocabulary (notice how I said just “adding”, and not “appropriately using”) willy-nilly isn’t going to take the stress off. Like Pi said (kudos for 2400 btw), everytime you use high-level vocabulary, the reader has to go back to verify its correct usage. Eventually, the scorers will be negatively affected as they begin to focus on the vocabulary rather than the essay itself. For example, there’s a sophomore in my English AP class, and everybody hates him because he uses extensive vocab (including the teacher); not sure if I’m allowed to do this, but check out his blog: [Bejeweled And Other Interesting Yet Simple Things](<a href=“Bejeweled And Other Interesting Yet Simple Things”>Bejeweled And Other Interesting Yet Simple Things)
Lack of indepth analysis for second paragraph
Lack of introductory paragraph
Lack of hooker/parter
Lack of 3rd evidence- just do it, even if the book says it’s optional

I may have been too harsh, but this is the way I see it.

On the december SAT I had 3 solid examples, filled 2 pages, had an intro and conclusion, and got an 8???

^Make a thread on Tuesday with the JPG’s uploaded to ImageShack or a similar website and have some CC members see why you got an 8.

wait in the score report tomorrow our essays will be included in there?

^Yes; you’ll find 2 JPEGs each with one page of your essay.
