I took the sat subject tests and they allow you to apply 4 schools that the score will be sent for free. I wanted to take up on this option but i am doubtful about my scores...when you apply for college, do you need to use this service offered by college board or can you report it by yourself on your application? I just feel like it's a waste of money to pay money to have a score reproted...i want to be able to choose which scores i want sent.

Almost all colleges require an official score report when you apply, meaning one sent by the College Board. There are some that accept just what is submitted on your high school transcript but none of those are high ranks. You can order them sent as part of applyiong to take the test and as you note that gives you four free sends. You are not required to request the free sends and can instead pay a fee for any other sends you want after the score comes out.
