Scoring your essays + helping with writing and math questions!

Hi everyone!

I’m done with writing so I’d like to help everyone else improve in it too. Post any MCQ questions you have here (I might too - if I go over writing again!) and your essays, and I’ll provide explanations and constructive criticism.
I would also be glad to help with math questions, MCQ or grid-ins.

By the way: I didn’t get a 12 on the essay; I got a 10, so I can provide helpful tips for a 10 (not 12) essay.

PROMPT: is deception ever necessary?

The misuse of deception can lead to catastrophic results: accusations are made, trust is lost, and the overall goal becomes compromised. In certain situations, however, deception is necessary. The importance of deception is evident through the imprisoned jews during the holocaust and the need to keep loved ones safe.
During the holocaust, Jews were beaten, tortured, and starved. The only way for them to survive was through deception. Men would blatantly lie about education, professions, and skills in order to get envied positions, and would secretly receive outside help. Women would make friends with greedy guards in order to receive extra rations, and children would use their petite size to hide from the nazis. Deception was necessary in Jewish camps, for it was the only way to live.
The importance of deception can also be seen in the protection of loved ones.Through experience, I have learned that not all secrets are best told. Some, if spoken, could lead to disastrous emotional and physical effects. The careful use of deception is the only way to keep the secrets from leaking out to those you care about. For example, in order to preserve the magic of christmas for my youngest brother, I have to use deception. I lie to him about the 8 reindeer that fly through the night, and jolly old saint nick who delivers presents to all the little boys and girls. Although I am deceiving him of the truth, it is for the best.
The uses of deception can vary from evilness to kindness, but whatever the purpose, deception is a crucial tool. It keeps secrets, saves lives, and much more. Therefore, I believe that in certain situations, deception IS necessary.

7/12

You establish a strong thesis and show in your first example that “deception was the only way to live.”

I advise you to elaborate more on the strong example you used in the beginning; it was an excellent idea that could have better been developed - perhaps make it more specific by citing a particular person’s story of the time and how his or her life was affected?

The second example is also OK, but the topic sentence is inapt. You show how you used deception to “preserve magic” - so it’s not really a form of protection in this case. I’d also elaborate on “it is for the best” - how did it help your brother, and what could have happened if you did otherwise?

The conclusion is straight to the point but avoid phrases like “much more” because they (at least to me) sound like you’ve run out of thoughts… keep writing!

You use transitions very smoothly. However, I’d advise you add some strong SAT vocab for a more eloquent progression.

Great work overall, but I believe you have room for improvement. Hopefully you’d get better with practice, as long as you know what needs to be enhanced.

hey bro what would you say is the best way to increase my score in math. I got a 700 and am looking to shoot this up to the middle to high 700s. i have the pwn the sat, and i have dr chungs, but tbh i think the latter is a bit too excessive. i usually get screwed over on probability questions and 3d questions

Once you’re in the 700 level, the game changes.

You need all the sections you ALREADY solved, since you started your SAT prep. With a notebook on your side, go by each question carefully and note any particular kind of question (f.x. circles) or skill (f.x. constructing an equation from word problem infos) in the notebook. Do that for every test you ever solved.

At the end you’ll have a complete compiled list of your weaknesses. Go on brilliant.org and practice the lesson/skill you have issues with. Study the lessons, do the drill questions, then take the quiz. Make sure you’re uderstanding the steps to solve everything and where things came from. Pay special attention to your mistakes!

Once you’re done with a skill/questiont type on Brilliant, google “[skill name] hard SAT questions.” PWN the SAT’s questions might come in handy here, too. Practice with understanding. Write all the questions you solve on copybook with full steps and highlight anything particular you need to pay attention to. Mark any questions you get wrong and try them again the next day.

I did this and went from 720 to 800 in SAT math, so hopefully this will work for you too. Good luck.

@BethanyD congrats on the 8 hunna. would you say that you could solve any sat math question in ur sleep?
