Hi ScottJ - You obviously know a bit about BC. I posted below, but I was hoping to get your opinion on my EA chance. My GPA is very high, but my ACT are average, I have a 32 superscored from four tests. I know BC superscores ACTs, but do you think this may hurt my chance at EA?

Tons of kids from my school apply to BC (about 35 each year.) Many of the top 5% just apply as a safety school, get accepted but don’t go. This may hurt my chances because BC is my first choice school and I really, really, really want to go. I attend the highest rated public school in NJ. It is extremely competitive and we send many kids to the ivy and upper tier schools.

So here goes my numbers… do you think I have a chance at EA, given all the comp at my school.

GPA 4.60 (out of 4) - 5.70 (out of 5) I only have weighted GPA from my guidance counselor

Top 5% in very competitive school
17 honors/AP classes - Straight A’s 3 years

ACT 32 (superscored)
Many School leadership activities such as Peer Advisor and SAAD, School Ambassador,
Tutor, NHS, Language Honor Society, Good community service

Very good essay (my AP English teacher said, 'It really moved her"
Very good letters of rec

Dear tribegirl09 : Your academic scores are certainly acceptable, your class rank is outstanding, and your ACT (superscored) is a possible cause of concern for the EA round (based on the view of your sectional scores if not superscored). You have not provided details on the sectional material here.

Your school service roles map well onto the service concepts at Boston College; lack of all sports and all music/arts represents a gap in the portfolio. (Basically, one is left to question what you would do for two or three hours each afternoon in High School. How did you fill the time and what would that gap be like if you were on your own at BC? Would you find social activities at BC or find boredom?)

One might have expected more subject honor societies in your academic awards but that might be tied to your school structure (but a top NJ school typically has subject area honor societies).

Your AP details are missing - your honors/AP count should have many AP courses in light of your weighted average and while AP scores are not used at Boston College for acceptance (only placement), AP course work is used to determine candidate acceptance criteria. A distribution in math, science, english, history, and foreign language would help our understanding.

As I read your profile, there is nothing that really stands out as your passion, the one area inside or outside of school that really ignites your interests. Perhaps this was explored in your essay? I hope your “really, really, really” want to go to BC came out in your application - not only why you want to attend, but what you expect to be able to contribute to the campus fabric.

In closing, you appear to be an academic fit. There are many intangibles not discussed in your profile that we have highlighted, however there is nothing here that disqualifies your application for sure.

Thanks, ScottJ - I met with the admissions officer for New Jersery a number in times when I visited BC. I expressed my great desire to attend BC. All my classes, except for French have been Honors/AP classes - the usual AP Calc., AP English, History, Economics and AP Science for four years.

I do play club sports and I included that in my resume. Our sports teams are very competitive so I never made the cut ther :(.

My straight ACT was a 30, superscored to 32. OUr school does not offer subject honor societies.
