The ADP program (academic development program) for students coming in with low scores on their SATs. Admission into this program requires that students remain on the campus during the winter semester. The students are required to pay for their winter meal plan but not the cost of the class they are required to take.

I am not so sure there is great value in this program because the kids that are staying in the winter are not the best students yet they are only taking one course. There is alot of time on their hands, and the partying gets out of control. If they would like to take additional courses they must pay for them on a per credit basis. The program admits students who they see as potential risks yet the services do not address these students in a more effective way.

How many credits do these students take during the regular two semesters? How many students are in this program? How are they selected?

I do not have the numbers on how many students are in the program. Instead of taking the regular English sequence the ADP students take a different sequence which is scaled back to the basics. The program is really meant to give those kids an extra boost to succeed in college as well as to help them with their writing skills. The ADP classes are non-credit, therefore the students need to remain of campus during intersession.

I came into Scranton as an ADP student, and your idea of getting too much partying in is far from the truth. Very few students actually stay for intersession and take a class, so the parties if there are any are very minimal. Plus I lived only about an hour and a half away and paid the 20 bucks for the parking pass i drove home Thursdays after class and came back up Monday morning before my class. With class 4 days a week 3 hours a day, you dont have to worry about partying. It is a very intensive class that requires a lot of work and effort to pass it. The amount of credits the class is worth is the same 4 credits unless you take a gym which is 1 credit. I know many people who are on the deans list that were enrolled as an ADP student, the SAT scores are a very small portion of what makes up the student. By a poor SAT score your judging who this student is and what they do on their free time? You automatically think its a waste of time and money to send someone to school for this reason? All ADP is if you get under a 500 on one of your SAT grades. Like me i got over 500s on everything but math, that doesnt make me a stupid irresponsible kid who does nothing but party. You need to rethink what it means and what they are trying to accomplish as a school before you think ill of anyone.

The sequence of the ADP English is not the same as the non ADP English class. You are living at home and you can commute. Most students are not commuting to Scranton and therefore are staying there. There are many students that stay during the intersession especially since it is mandatory for those in the ADP program. Also those students living off campus come back early because the parties are going strong during intersession.
