Anybody know anything about or have experience with this concentration, good or bad? I'm intending to concentrate in SAC and just wanted to know more about it or hear any insights about it anyone might have.

Nobody? Any input would be appreciated! I’m just getting excited and would love to hear anything about it…

My son takes several of the upper production classes as part of his (School of Music) multimedia/music tech degree and really enjoys the department.

Are you most interested in review/analysis, writing, or production?
The SAC degree usually requires successful completion of some core film “academic”/critical courses before advancing to production or screenwriting classes. If you like to write, there is an outstanding screenwriting seminar completely worth attending.

Sorry I can’t give you any direct information. I am a wee bit familiar with portfolio-based pure production/BFA degrees at places like Tisch NYU, USC etc due to a past life ;)

While SAC is not a portfolio/talent-based admission like those programs, it’s a solid program nonetheless with some great connections at a fabulous school populated with some terrific actors, composers, sound engineers – so you have at your disposal the right environment to make really solid films if you’re so inclined.

Maryland13: My son is an Acting major and knows a lot of the SAC students, and some of the staff too. He took one of the SAC courses last year. There’s some natural overlap with the students from these 2 depts since the film students need actors and the acting students need to act. I’ve met the head of the screenwriting dept - a very nice guy with a few major motion pictures on his resume and like all Wolverines, lots of connections (presumably). One of the SAC seniors is directing a play in the student-run theatre program (Google "Basement Arts). Also - SAC students participate in the Hopwood Awards writing competition - particularly the Kasdan Scholarship - another thing you might want to Google. Good Luck and Go Blue.

Thanks kmcmom13 and bazaarshopper! I’m really interested in screenwriting so this is very encouraging! I think you’re right, the strength of the arts and acting program in general are a major upside for doing actual film production even if it’s outside of classes. Appreciate your input.

You’re likely a great fit for the program, then. Check out this concentration in screenwriting:

Also note that Mich is the alma mater to many successful writers in general, and has a sweet MFA program…just in case you’re interested in other forms as well.
Best wishes for a great college experience!
