Screenwriting/Dramatic Writing, Print Journalism and Acting

These are my interests as of now. I am a freshman in high school, but I am planning on applying to go to Bard College at Simon's Rock this fall for Fall 2010. I would go their two years and then transfer. I have been acting since I was 6 and it's my passion. I prefer film acting than classical theater. Modern Theater is fine like Barefoot in The Park, but I'm not into Broadway or anything. I have two agents now in the Southeast, but not much opportunities here. I would really like to be a print journalist too or screenwriter. I would like to work in the arts for journalism like at Variety. I love talking about tv shows and I use to be into all the new rave about the pilots/ratings and everything. I haven't had time to go back into it, since I have been in high school. BUT I think I may be a good columnist/reporter. I wrote a letter to Miep Gies (Holocaust helper, Anne Frank) and I'm into Social Studies. I would love to write books about the Holocaust too and different people's stories. My father is Jewish, but I'm raised Roman Catholic. My grandfather was born in Sicily and my grandmother is from Italy. I just love writing about my life and my culture. I can even see myself working for the Today Show, but I'm much more of a writer than anything.

I also would love to write for a tv show/movie. I don't know about a plays, I'm into film/tv a lot more and that goes for acting as well. I have so many idea's for some shows and would love to write and star in my own show. Could I be a journalist/screenwriter or an actor who freelances for newspapers? Could I act and write movies? I always wanted to double major in acting and journalism. I may like that program that Northwestern has, it's called the Accelarted Masters Program. I could get my BA/MA in 4 years and after that I could always get an MFA or two in Screenwriting or Acting. Other schools which I liked are: NYU, USC, Flagler College, UNC- Chapel Hill, Ithaca College, UMass-Amherst, Northwestern, Loyola Marymount University, UGA, IU- Bloomington, Boston College, Chapman University, Yale, Sarah Lawrence College, Bennington College, UW- Madison, UM- Ann Arbor, Marquette, University of Maryland, University of Maryland, Ohio U, Stony Brook, UCI, University of Florida, Emory, Penn State, Lehigh, Pepperdine, Mizzu, UTexas, University of Hawaii-Manoa, Georgetown, Suny Purchase, UCLA, etc. Which programs would be good if I would be a transfer? How do I get into dramatic writing? I really love it and would love to write too. Any advice. I love all these things. I think I may get an agent in NYC when I go to Simon's Rock. Thanks!

Bump!!!

AS a
HS freshamn I would encourag you to explore all the above… for those reading I could add many reality points here

I am appyling to college next year, an early college. So, it is sooner than you think, but who knows.

well UCLA has the best film, theatre, television department in the nation.
If you’re really interested in writing then you could apply to that school and then specialize in screenwriting. Or you could major in English Literature and become a writer. You really don’t need a degree for screenwriting and most other speculative forms of writing. A degree will certainly help though.
If you want to act and write, that’s possible of course. FOr example, at UCLA you could major in English Literature (for writing) and minor in Theatre.

I didn’t like UCLA that much. I like on camera acting more also. It also has no journalism major and heard that most take more than 5 yrs to graduate.

Nodnarb,
With all due respect I think there are some USC alumni who might disagree with you that UCLA’s film school is better than the School of Cinematic Arts at USC.

As far as I know there is no objective ranking of cinema schools. It is best for individual students to do research, visit the complexes, speak to faculty, check out financial aid programs, investigate job placement, study admit rates, view lists of awards and make their own determination.

I totally agree with you Georgia Girl.

early_college - my D is also just finishing her freshman year in hs. Her interest is journalism that would include fashion and travel. She will be writing for her hs newspaper next year and is lobbying the teach in charge for a fashion column that she will write. We live in SoCal and have a friend that is an editor for online magazines and has previously worked in New York for many big publications. She has offered my D an internship for a few weeks this summer so that D can learn about the magazine business. D also loves the arts and entertainment area and may consider that sort of writing in the future.

I would suggest you look at a good journalism or english major where you can minor in something else. There are many ways to go in order to achieve what you desire. You just need to investigate colleges and programs to see what is best for you. My D has already decided that she does not want to go out of state for college, which is ok since there are many good schools she can attend here in CA.

I applied for my high school’s newspaper and did not get in. They only excepted upperclassmen and I would have been a sophomore next year. I go to a big school though and it seems pretty popular. I would also love travel, entertainment (Variety stuff on tv shows), or maybe a columnist. I am planning on applying to this early college, Bard College at Simon’s Rock in the Berkshires this fall. I then would transfer after two years and I like schools like Northwestern, NYU, USC, etc. But I wouldn’t mind LAC at all such as Sarah Lawrence College, :)
