Screenwriting? ...With an econ degree?

So I know of the immense competition in Hollywood and of how many people hold down waiter jobs for years just to get their foot in the door. So I was thinking, if all it takes is one good script to get your start in Hollywood, would it be smart to major in something like econ (or anything, really) that would allow me to support myself (assuming I find a decent job) while working on scripts in my free time? This way, I still have a career ahead of me if things don't end up working out.

It just seems like all the screenwriters out there these days were in some type of film program or majored in English.

I'm personally against creative writing/screenwriting/etc. classes. If you're taking them to learn their technicalities (especially screen- and play-writing), then I understand. But if you're taking them to write better scripts, then I think you're better off exploring other subjects so that you can bring a deeper, more varied perspective to the plate.
