Screenwriting

I want to be a screenwriter. What are some of the best majors for me to have?

I know there is a Playwrighting/Screenwriting major, but it isnt offered at many schools, so what is the best alternative?

My advice? Don't major in it. Watch movies instead and read books on screenwriting. When you start working on small movie productions you're going to use a filmography moreso than a resume with a degree on it.

A friend of mine never even finished his degree and now he's a screenwriter in Hollywood. All he did was watch movies and read; but he had a lot a talent, too.

Just get a degree in anything and work on movie productions on the weekends. Here you go:

Mandy's Film and TV Production Directory - television - video - broadcast

maybe some drama classes can help. but that might only be because you can read some scripts. a common major is english, but that's only because they offer classes in screen writing. but you don't even need to go to college to be a screenwriter. you can also just read a lot of scripts.

I would definitely NOT chose not to go to college. Some schools (USC in particular) have excellent screenwriting programs (with really competitive admissions standards), but if that's not your thing, a related field like playwrighting, theater, english, creative writing, film studies, etc. will be an good preparation also.

So, I'm in the same boat as you as far as mentality goes. I personally think you should pick a major that interests you and requires a lot of reading and minor in creative writing, screenwriting, media studies, etc. I truly believe that anyone serious about screenwriting needs something to write about.
