"screwed up" junior year, so what are my chances?

The deadline for most schools is January 1st. High schools in most cases will not issue your transcript until February 15th or so when your first semester is added to it. So the transcript seen by the schools when you file your app will not have what you are hoping for unless you have trimesters.

my schools goes by quarters. the first quarter ended and is already on my transcript, so my gpa is updated. the second quarter ends in december before christmas break, so that will probably be added to my transcript right before i apply. either way, i have my first quarter grades added, and it helped a little bit, but the quarter ended last monday, so i couldn’t have applied early anywhere if i wanted the first quarter in.

How fast does your school update the transcripts? You need to request them before the break so your applications are complete and you need to use the additional form to rerequest the grades for first half of the year.

i know that my cumulative gpa is updated immediately, so i think that it’s a fast process. i know my current transcipt has quarter one of this year.

i’m not sure what you’re saying. if it’s already on my transcript, why would i have to request the first half of the year again? my school just automatically adds every quarter into the transcript, and if i request my transcript right before christmas break, my 2nd quarter will probably be added.

commonapp has a process that asks students to request a new transcript at the end of first semester. It is expected that most schools don’t update transcripts until the end of January or so.

You should check with your school about when you should request transcripts for them to include what you are expecting to be on the safe side.

okay, thanks!

but why did you ask if i applied early anywhere?

and anyone else?

pls pls pls pls pls

You’re fine. The most selective schools you’re applying to look to be NYU and GW, and I would be surprised if you didn’t get into either. Your SATs are good. Your Junior year might have been rough, but your overall is good, and if you’re doing well this year then it shouldn’t be a problem. ECs are good as well. With an Intel placement and USABO semifinalist ranking, I would be legitimately surprised if you got rejected from more than one of the colleges on your list.

I think your strategy with this is also pretty sound; your gpa isn’t low enough to require a blatant excuse, and you would be better off not mentioning your illness. Though if your counselor could vaguely reference “personal problems” to account for grade 11, then that will work in your favor.

thank you, nihilus! i feel much better :)
