Scripps' Policy on Dual Credit

Hi guys!

I'm almost certain that I will be applying ED to Scripps in the fall. I'm currently in the process of figuring out my senior schedule. For English, I have two options: dual-credit English or AP English. Personally, I would rather take AP, but I don't think enough people will sign up. I know that if I take dual, the credit won't transfer (most likely), but will the admissions committee consider it to be a challenging class?

I'm also trying to decide between Spanish 2 or dual-credit Spanish. I know Scripps prefers three years of a foreign language, but that's not possible for me, unless they consider each semester of dual as one year. Would they?

I know I should probably e-mail the admissions office, but I'm not sure it's necessary. My GC didn't know.

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would go ahead and contact the admissions office. I don’t know enough about dual-credit classes to answer your questions. What I do know is that my D contacted the admissions office last summer about questions she had about her possible class schedules and how they could impact her ability to get into Scripps. The admissions counselor she spoke to was very helpful. They would also be interested in circumstances in which an applicant isn’t able to meet requirements because of what the high school offers.

You also may want to ask them about their policies regarding accepting AP credits, just so there are no misunderstandings. My impression (and it could be wrong) is that while they may accept an AP class for a given topic, that may not reduce the amount of time (or rather the number of college credits) you would need to graduate. So you probably want to understand how they look at AP classes as a whole.

Good luck!
