Senior English?

My plan for my senior year was to dual enroll at the local community college to take English 1101... so my guidance office gave me the forms and such and I sent my application. Upon receiving my transcript, the community college informed me that my high school doesn't allow students enrolled in or who have taken AP English Language (i.e. me) to dual enroll ENC 1101. So I asked if I could do 1102, and the community college said to get back to them once I get my AP scores. I got my scores by phone today and got a 5 on AP Lang, so I contacted the community college again... they said that a 5 overqualifies me for both English 1101 and 1102. So now I'm stuck. If I can't dual enroll, my only other option is AP Lit (which I am already signed up for as a backup)... but my goal all along has been to avoid that. It's the most difficult AP at my school because of incompetent teachers who over-assign things that don't even help the students do well on the exam. Basically, taking AP Lit isn't an option for me.

So I'm not sure what to do. I think I'm required to take an English class because I need 4 English credits in HS, but would it "look bad" to colleges to go from AP English Lang to English 4 Honors in my senior year? Any alternative ideas you can suggest?

You got a 5 on AP Lang…o.0

My son is in the same position you are with Englsih, only his HS doesn’t even have non AP Honors, so he is taking “rhetoric and movies”. I talked to a couple of "highly selective"colleges about it, and they said to have the GC write a note and explain why, and that should answer any questions.

It should be an intersting note, since the GC is the one that screwed up his schedule to begin with! :)

Looking at the bright side, you do get out of having to read Pride & Prejudice and other fun, exciting literature.

Good luck.

To update this thread (partly in hopes of getting some additional feedback)… I talked to an admissions officer at UF and asked about my situation and she said it wouldn’t look bad but they (UF) look for 3 AP’s and 4 core classes on a senior schedule… My 3 AP’s are environmental science, Spanish, and Calc BC… my other 4 classes are all electives… so to get my fourth core class I think I’m just going to take AP Lit online through FLVS. The perk being that if I don’t do superbly, my grade won’t show up on my report card throughout the year (avoiding parental concern), and it won’t show up on my transcript until the END of the school year.

Does anybody think English 4 Honors (FLVS) would be a just as sufficient alternative to AP Lit?
