SCU Class of 2024 EA Decisions

Our DS was accepted to Leavey, received an $11K incentive grant. Comes from a competitive private school (OOS), 32 ACT, 3.7 GPA (unweighted), average, ECs, good essay. Was very excited but still considering some other schools too.

1430 SAT, 3.98 UW, 4.52 W, 9 APs, National Hispanic Scholar, community service (founded nonprofit with website), two varsity sports.

Son received acceptance and is very thankful. He thought he would be accepted but was not sure. He has 4.0GPA and 34 ACT and good but not outstanding ECs. Received Dean Scholarship which as we understand is the #3 merit award and varies. His was not as much as half tuition but pretty close. Sadly, the price tag for SCU is so high that he will not be able to consider without additional aid and I believe this is the “final offer” situation.

Anyone know what the odds are of getting in if you’ve been deferred?

@JD7777 If you don’t mind can you share how much was the dean’s amt per year

Spoke with the Financial Aid Office. Only 16 Johnson Scholarships. About the same number (12 - 15) of Presidential Level (full scholarship). Around 40 Provost (half). And several hundred Dean’s Scholarship (various amounts but a max of $18K. Additional incentive awards, usually for minorities, first gen, etc. can also vary greatly.

@allthesame1

It was 15 or 18. I didn’t see the email. One school was a 15k grant and the other was 18k grant and one of these schools was Santa Clara.

@losername

Thanks for that specific info. That is an interesting breakdown. I thought the Johnson Scholarships are awarded in the spring. Did I miss that? Are students being selected for this award already?

You’re right JD … just included Johnson for sake of comparison.

Thank you @JD7777

This process can be really rough on moms and dads. We all know how unique and fantastic our children are. I have worked in high schools for 24 years and I’ve seen parents take college news very personally. Please give yourself a break. Colleges are big business and they use algorithms to build their student body to fit specific profiles and sometimes kids just don’t show up in the metrics like parents hope. Sounds like your kids will have some great options. And, I’m guessing there are many students like ours who were accepted won’t be able to attend SCU due to finances so who knows how the process might play out.

Accepted

GPA: 4.22
SAT: 1410

Hey, I was wondering if anyone knows if we should accept scholarships and financial aid for EA now or if we should wait until we make a decision? Like do we NEED to accept them to keep them?

I believe you wait until you commit to attending SCU for financial aid. The deadline is 5/01.

My D was admitted EA and offered a SCU Need-Based Grant. Although we were grateful for the generous FA, I didn’t think the “need-based” grant will be offered to her (or will be reduced significantly) when her sibling graduates from college in two years. We read the description of the grant but it was not clear how it will be determined following years so I emailed the school with my question. They replied that SCU Need-Based Grant is renewable for 12 consecutive quarters and the amount will not change even if EFC changes, but the name of the award may change.
So the “Need-Based” grant is not need-based after all? I don’t know but I want to share this information so other students who were offered this grant has some clarification.

Were students notified that they were selected to apply for the Johnson scholarship or is that an entirely separate process? We understand how competitive these “big money, small number receive” awards are but would not want to miss any opportunity.

Daughter got into SCU, College of Letters and Sciences class of 2024 with a Presidential Scholarship. We are thrilled.

Wow . Congrats .
Can you share your daughter Stat .
My Daughter get in CSE in engineering school with Dean scholarship . USD 30,000 per year but need to maintain GPA 3.0. ( not sure if this is very difficult to achieve ?)
