SCU Scholars Day

My D was accepted to SCU EA. Today she received an email that she has been invited to SCU Scholars Day on February 7.

We looked at the website about it, and the day seems designed to introduce one pretty thoroughly to SCU. But what does the invitation mean or imply for scholarships and the like? Are all students accepted EA invited to participate, or only some?

Undergraduate Admission - scholars day FAQ's

"Does this event impact my scholarship?
Attendance to this event has no bearing upon your award. Scholars Day is designed for students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement and promise. It provides an opportunity to explore Santa Clara University and meet current students, their parents, faculty and alumni."

Actually, my question was -- if one is invited to "Scholars" Day, does it mean that one will receive a merit scholarship? (Apparently, yes; and financial aid/merit awards for EA admittees are now on e-campus).

That is great! I know lots of students who applied EA to SCU and got in, however have only heard of one being invited to Scholar's Day. I believe it is tied in to the Honors College. Not everyone invited to Honors College gets merit money. Also, please know that the merit aid is not all going up at once, b/c some students heard last week, and others still have not been notified.

What level did your daughter receive? And what are her stats?

I called the school; Scholars' Day has nothing to do with the Honors College, but with merit aid (those who got scholarships were invited; invitations to the Honors College have gone out to some students and more will go out next week).

Thanks for the clarification- that is very good to know. Has your daughter received notification of her merit award by mail or email, or just through e-campus? I know another student received an email with notification.

I would assume that those who receive merit aid will be invited to Honors College.

She got an email that directed her to e-campus, where you have to log in with your ID/password. The admissions counselor I talked to said packets are being mailed out.

The woman at the honors college said they have sent out some invitations, and will hope to do another batch within a week. And she pretty clearly said that a merit scholarship does not guarantee an invitation to the Honors College.

Good to know. Thanks for keeping me up to date. I guess time will tell...!

For those who have received invitation to Scholars Day, can you provide stats please?

GPA 4.4 weighted, 4.0 unweighted
SAT: 800 M, 740 W, 700 CR
6 AP courses, 8 Honors courses

Did anyone go to Scholars Day in February? Just wondering about the experience of attending and if you would say it was worthwhile.

We were scheduled to go, but had to cancel. We're thinking of going in April. I'd be curious to know whether it was valuable, too.

The Scholar's Day In February was completely worth it, granted I live in Southern California and Carpooled with a friend who was also invited.

The experience was good in the sense that it generated camaraderie amongst intelligent students. It showed me that there would be people capable of keeping up with my wit and sense of humor as well as challenge me to compete academically. It had an entirely different feeling than that of the open house earlier in the year.

Btw My stats are way lower than the person who previously posted; however, I play two varsity sports and am an Eagle Scout.

Thanks for that information Sample45- it is very helpful.

I got invited to the scholars day for regular decision, but im confused as to if this means anything. I know it was discussed about for early action but does it mean merit awards for regular decision as well? was the day worth it? Santa Clara is not high up on my list but i am wondering if the day might give me new perspective esp if i might be getting any money

Anyone care to share?

We attended Scholars Day yesterday- if anyone is interested, I will write a more detailed post later today.

I’d be interested in your impressions.

Zetesis, I had the feeling you would be the person to reply!

So the day was gorgeous, sunny, 75 degrees by late morning. Also, we live in Los Gatos, which is very close by to SCU, so no travel involved for us, and I went to SCU, graduated in 1981, so I know the campus well.

Overall, I was very pleased with the information that we gathered throughout the day. My son is interested in pre-med, so he and my husband attended a session with great inside info for helping students get in to medical school. I attended a session on research being done on exercise and psychology. What was emphasized throughout all the sessions was that there are no TAs for any classes, professors are totally accessible, and research opportunities abound for those that are interested, starting as early as freshman year.

We had lunch with Carol Wenz of the Honors Program, who is wonderful. She randomly sat with us, and we had the opportunity to ask her a number of questions on the new Core Curriculum, requirements of Honors students and how the two work together. My son also received information as to which AP courses would count in terms of not having to take a course at SCU. For example, even if he aces AP Bio, he still has to take Biology at SCU, but Calculus will excuse him from a lower Math sequence- same with AP French.

I enjoyed the fact that there were professors around, at lunch and just walking around campus, waiting to be asked a question. My son is going to meet with Dr. Craig Stephens this week, while he is on Spring Break, to see about doing research with him and check out his lab, etc. Dr. Stephens does biotech research, which my son loves.

Santa Clara had a high number of excellent applicants this year. The students that we met were very impressive for the most part, and very friendly. I think my son is sold- he loves the idea of small classes and lots of interaction with professors.

If you have specific questions, let me know!

It sounds wonderful!
