SCU Transfer Fall 2010

Accepted into Leavey!!! :)

congratulations everyone! I am almost positive I’ll go there, it is my first choice…however, I am waiting on the financial aid package!! I guess that will be the ultimate decision factor…how soon after recieving your acceptance package did you find out about how much you were being granted in financial aid??

Me too! My mum just received my acceptance in the mail yesterday and we are still waiting on the financial aid package…it has come down to Santa Clara and Chapman.

congratulations!

Well, I got my financial aid package…NOT good. I only got about 5000 in a loan which is barely 10% of the huge tuition cost…

this is my first time applying for college, and my parents are foreign so we don’t really know too much about this whole process…is there anything I can do at this point to get more money, loans, scholarships? Santa Clara is my first choice but my parents can not realistically shell out 45,000 dollars a year for me…

I would try the Financial Aid Forums since your question concerns international parents. I would have mentioned ParentPLUS loans, but I don’t know if your parents would qualify. And beyond that, I rarely recommend anyone going into deep debt for undergraduate degree (students and parents).

For the student going in for a “practical” degree 20K is generally seen as doable, maybe even up to 50K (total for the entire undergraduate degree) for those who are not risk adverse.

For the parent paying into the degree (with savings or extra loans) the question needs to be a serious look at their retirement - I generally advise parents to not put retirement into jeopardy - but what that means in terms of how much to pay out or take out in loans will vary for each family.

Tough situation. Sounds like SCU will cost you full freight of 45K a year, of which 5K so far has been tagged as coming from a student loan. Do you have a better financial offer from Chapman? Other UCs/CSUs?

thanks annika! My parents are going to try and appeal so we will see what happens!

You say your parents are foreign. Does that mean they are not US citizens? Are you a US citizen? I am just wondering if you are classified as an “International Student” because at least according to SCU’s website they do not give financial aid to internationals.

From SCU website: “If you are an international student planning to enroll at SCU, you and your family must assume the total cost of a Santa Clara education. Financial aid is not available to undergraduate international students.”

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to ask, especially to clarify whether or not you are considered international.

From what I read on this forum and others, it doesn’t appear that SCU is particularly generous with financial aid. My son was accepted at SCU a few years ago and would have attended, but the aid offered just didn’t match what other schools were offering. I appealed our award to SCU, but to no avail. In the end my son ending up attending a lower ranked university, though things have turned out well for him. Nevertheless, with an endowment of over $500 million - [About Santa Clara University - Budget](About SCU - Santa Clara University) - I wish they were a little more forthcoming with grants. I have another child who will be applying there in a few months!

Have you decided where you’re going??

Hey im applying as a sophomore transfer and am completely nervous for the decisions. Do you know when they come out? And what my chances are? I go to UCI and have a 3.4 cumulative and got a 3.67 last quarter. I got accepted in high school too. I applied to School of Arts and Sciences.
