So does SDSU prefer local vs out of state students for nursing? My son is out of state and has a 4.3 W and 3.8 UW. He has a 1450 SAT superscore but it looks like they aren’t considering that this year.
@TaraSkye1: SDSU gives priority to locals for all majors. This does not mean locals are guaranteed a spot.
So how much of a “suitcase school” is SDSU?
@TaraSkye1: Most Cal states are commuter schools but many of the SDSU students will live within close proximity of campus so not as much as a “suitcase” school. They now have a 2 year on-campus living requirement (waived due to Covid) but my younger son attended SDSU and my niece currently attends SDSU and both live or lived within a mile of campus after Sophomore year. It is better than most of the Cal states in regards to not having the “commuter” feel.
@TaraSkye1, based on your other replies, it looks like your son has some good acceptances with good merit.
San Diego State has out-of-state fees and they don’t provide financial aid to non-residents, so you’d be on the hook for minimum $42,000 a year. Are you okay with that?
It’s within the ballpark though a little more than the other schools with the scholarships. And yes, he has had 7 acceptances so far (out of 13) , but has his heart set on the California beach experience, so SDSU is a top choice. When we visited back in Feb before COVID admissions told us that they only accept 5% of the nursing applicants so we know that it is a reach and chances are less than an Ivy League acceptance. My parents retired in the Del Mar area and lived there until they passed away so he has happy memories of visiting his grandparents and going to the beach.
Do you know when SDSU does release the admission results?
Based on the past several years, they will accept High Stat applicants (other than Nursing) in Mid-December with an invitation to apply to the Honors college. The majority of decisions will be posted in March.
@Gumbymom Question. My older son was asked to apply to honors college at SDSU two years ago. He did not apply because he didn’t want to take the extra courses and live in the honors dorm. He subsequently did not get accepted to sdsu. My younger son is now applying sdsu as one of his top choices . I told him apply to honors college if they ask you even if you change your mind later. Did my older son lose his spot because he didn’t follow through with the honors application? Just curious so we don’t make the same mistake twice. Maybe this will help others too.
@TwoforT: As far as I am aware, I have not seen this situation posted for SDSU.
All applicants can apply to the Honors college without the invite. The high stat applicants accepted in December historically have been officially invited to apply as a priority applicant and if they did not apply, they still kept their acceptance. I have not seen an instance where an applicant that was invited but opted not to apply to the Honors college, and not be accepted.
However, I have seen applicants whom decided to apply to the Honors college without the priority invite and whom were later not accepted.
If invited, you are not obligated to apply or if you apply, not obligated to accept but you can still keep your admission.
I know of one case where an applicant was invited to apply to Cal Poly Pomona’s Honors college prior to their decision, accepted into the Honors college but rejected by the school.
Apply to the Honors college or not applying as far as I am aware, is not a condition for an acceptance or rejection.
Hopefully anyone else with a similar situation will chime in.
Thanks @Gumbymom for the clarification. Good to know that admission isn’t dependent on honors college although I think it is probably still wise to pursue if offered.
@Gumbymom Do you think SDSU will still release High Stat admission decisions Mid-December even though the application doesn’t close until December 15th?
For 2018, the CSU application deadline was extended due to the California wildfires and SDSU still accepted High stat applicants in December. There is a good chance they may remain with the same timeline but maybe a week or delayed?
Have any high stats applicants been accepted to SDSU so far this application year?
@mochiko: For Fall 2020
Child development majors had a 29% acceptance rate with 203 admits for 697 applicants.
Liberal studies/Education had a 40% acceptance rate with 313 admits for 777 applicants.
@CaBeachMom. The CSU application deadline is December 15 so the decisions could be delayed a week or two.
Thank you! My daughter submitted her app so long ago that I didn’t realize apps were still open!
Does SLO do the same? She already received an email from them that if admitted she will receive a $3,000 scholarship as she is a National Hispanic Merit recipient.
My son hasn’t even received a portal setup notification from SLO. He submitted mid November. Anyone else in a similar situation? It’s the only state school that hasn’t sent him one yet.
@CaBeachMom: SLO does not offer early admits. Usually March is decision month. Also scholarships are through the FA office which is separate from admissions.
