SDSU Freshman Appeal for Fall 2016

Hi guys!
I was rejected from SDSU in late February. I appealed their decision and I called on April 8th and was told that the appeal had been received by SDSU. I’ve taken only college classes since the beginning of my Junior year in high school at a local CC. I’m an liberal arts major, so I’m not competing with my lovely STEM friends for a spot in their program. On my appeal, I stated I was the victim of a horrible crime that made it impossible for me to take the ACT for a better score and still be considered for Fall 2016 admission(they only take ACT scores up to a certain date, i think December?). I was wondering if any of you could help me and tell me more about the process and if it’s any different for a freshman applicant than it is for a transfer?(all the discussions on appeals seem to be focused more on transfer students). Also, does anyone know how many appeals they accept each year, if they set aside a certain number of spots for those wishing to appeal, or if they even necessarily take ANY students who appeal?? ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PROCESS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

GPA: 3.6
ACT: 21 (i know, it sucks)

Yes it’s different for freshman and transfer admissions! Did your CCC counselors advise you with Assist?

thank you so much for your help @Happy2Help ! And no, my counselors didn’t help me much at all. I told them I was appealing and did the whole packet and request for official transcripts myself. I am confident I have everything in my appeal though. Is this ok? Thanks!

Your EI seems very low compared to the average admitted student’s EI of >4000. I’m afraid it will not help to appeal.

Are you homeschooling? Is that why you’re taking CCC classes? So you don’t have your HS diploma?

Your best path would be to go to CCC after HS graduation and then follow the transfer requirements and reapply. Use Assist.org and work with the CCC advisors.

Good luck!

@Happy2Help The average EI is 1020 and mine is 930 so I’m not THAT far off lol. I am a middle college student. It is a respected program that allows kids to take 7-11 units of credit each quarter which simultaneously covers college credit and they have programs all over the country! But I will be graduating and walking at graduation with my HS, I just found major specific classes in a more mature environment way more rewarding:) With this new information, if you have any more advice I would appreciate it! If not, thanks for your help!

It’s extremely hard to get in to SDSU since it’s impacted, so my answer still stands – CCC then transfer.

BTW I’m aware of middle college programs. Will you be completing an AA at the same time as your HS graduation?

You may just need one year at CCC, so that would mean applying again this Fall.

Actually an EI of 930 vs 1020 is around 9 points difference on the ACT which is pretty far off. As stated above, SDSU is an impacted campus for all majors meaning more qualified applicants than spots. I have also been doing an informal study on EI’s for SDSU these past few years and unless you are local, the ACT threshold for EI is around 1000. SDSU accepts up to the November ACT sitting and part of the applucation process is knowing the deadlines so it is always wise to have all testing done prior to summer of Senior year so horrible/extenuating issues do not impact your chances. Most successful appeals are granted if the school makes the mistake, so I do not think the chances are in your favor.

If you plan to do the transfer route, SDSU is even harder to get into if you are not local, so you might want to consider attending a Local SD CCC for at least a year.

I wish you good luck and hopefully everything works out fine.

@Gumbymom @Happy2Help hi guys! i got an email today that said all the necessary documents had been received by SDSU and that the appeals committee would now be looking at it. From helping other people and helping in past years, is it typically good to receive an email from admissions at this point in the process? thanks!

All I can say is that for the 8 freshmen and 2 transfers who I know were accepted (no appeal needed), all had much higher stats. Just keep checking your portal.

Good luck!

@Happy2Help i was asking about the appeals process. My appeal has special circumstances explaining my lower 3.6 gpa and stats. Thanks for trying to help.
