im trying to decide between these three. i pretty much have it narrowed down to ucsb and sdsu, but i still would love to go to hawaii for the experience and location.

pros and cons for the schools? money and ranking is not an issue for any of them. I want to enjoy myself, not stress about how good of a school i go to.

i like nature- hiking, beaches, surfing, etc. Oh and i live in san diego, so none of the schools are too far away which is nice, but i am very close to my family so that might have an impact on my decision

I lived in Honolulu for almost 4 years. It’s an incredible place to visit for a week or a month, but if you have to be there for a long time it can get a bit boring and tedious. The geographic isolation and monotonous weather get a bit oppressive to some people, but others love them.

Since you’re close to your family, there may be times when you’re going to feel the need to go home for a visit, or a birthday, or some other occasion…maybe without much notice. So, being able to jump in your car and get home within about 4-5 hours would be a plus over Hawai’i.

Another vote for UCSB. Though UH sounds exotic and exciting, people I know who have worked or studied there tell me that it’s a commuter school with little activity on nights and weekends, and uninspiring academics outside of those that focus on Pacific Rim themes.

UC Santa Barbara is clearly the best school out of the three.

There’ll also be beach in Cali. It probably won’t be as exotic as Hawaii but you’ll find that Hawaii is a very small island(s) and soon be bored out of your mind.

What are you interested in, academically speaking? UH can be a good school depending on what you want to study, but as a graduate student there right now I’d have to say it doesn’t seem like it would be a terribly inspiring place to go for undergrad.
