Searching for: A College in the Midwest

I am currently a junior at my high school, so I might be getting a bit ahead of myself without my standarized test scores, but I'm looking for a college(s) that I might possibly be interested in EDing & getting accepted.

Ideally, I'm looking for a college like Carleton: good academics, friendly people, helpful teachers, liberal arts, and generally just a small feel-good kind of college with a bit of fun.

However, my GPA isn't the greatest. In fact, it's relatively poor for the school I go to, even for getting into state universities that I would also be looking at (U of Minnesota/U of Wisconsin/Madison).

(3.6-7 UW ~9)
(3.3-4 UW ~10)
Top 50% in school
Public School
Honors Classes?: Yes

AP Classes:
Taking: AP Calc, AP Human Geo, AP Lit, AP Psych
Will Take/Planning to Take: AP Econ, AP Chem, AP Bio, AP Lang

PSAT: Not Taken Yet, probably around 200-215 (NM Condemned Student)
SAT: Not Taken Yet
ACT: Not Taking

And to top it off, I'm an Asian-American, curving whatever numbers I have even lower at my chance of getting into colleges.

-I am looking for a college (preferably in the midwest, if not Minnesota) that has alike characteristics to Carleton, but might be easier to get in. I have also been trying to find the time to take a quick trip to Macalester, but I'm not sure I'd even have a chance to get into that one either.-

Any Suggestions?

Another Note: My sister got into Carleton and aboslutely loved it there. I also looked at Carleton and really liked it. She, however, had a much better GPA than me and did lots of ECs. I am also in a few ECs but I haven't held a notable position in any of them. Everybody at Carleton was very friendly and quirky in a way that I could defintely get used to. The campus was also very nice, although the city (Northfield) is slightly boring.

Thanks!

Your school must have crazy grade inflation. What’s your weighted GPA?

Anyways, for Carleton-esque, I’d go Alma, Adrian, Hobart and William Smith, Knox, Wooster, Cornell College (IA), and Kalamazoo.

Small, less selective LACs in the Midwest: Beloit, Knox, Lawrence, Kalamazoo, Cornell…

basically, check this out:
[Colleges That Change Lives](http://www.ctcl.org/)

Grinnell in Iowa and Carleton are comparable schools. Most people who apply to one, apply to the other. Grinnell may be a little easier to get into but same high quality academics and similar culture.

Your UW gpa is like 3.5 and you’re only top 50%?

You probably mean commended, not condemned. (Just a guess.)

Carleton-esque schools in the Midwest: Grinnell, Oberlin, Beloit, Knox, Lawrence, Kalamazoo, Earlham. The first two are about the same level of selectivity, though.

Alma is NOTHING like Carleton, other than also being a small LAC.

@schritzo: yes, I am in the top 50%, not quite in the top 25%. My GPA is exactly 3.5 as of now
@OHKID: my weighted GPA is around 3.75
@chal: yes, I meant conmmended, I just forgot to re-edit that part out :o.

And thanks guys. I heard about Grinnel and was thinking about looking into it, but it’s a bit out of my way to drive up there during the school year.

I’ll also check out some of the other schools mentioned. Thanks :)

Wasian

Check out Wittenberg. We know several students who absolutely love it there, including one who got in to Carleton but took the $$$ at Wittenberg—and she is sure she made the right choice. Wittenberg is very generous with merit money as well.

University of iowa!!! Hawkeye nation, baby!!!
