Hello!! I've recently started reading all of your posts here and all of your advice has helped me immensely.

I will be going into my senior year this year and am hoping to get into a strong musical theater school. However, I'm from a small town and haven't had the opportunities many have had in training. I'm worried that this will hinder by chances of getting into a good school. I was wondering if any of you could recommend some schools for me to look into that perhaps aren't as competitive to get into, or don't require an audition but still have a fairly strong musical theater program. I'm hoping this way, if I unfortunatly don't get into the program I'm hoping to, I could study for a year, get the experience I need, and come back for the next round of auditions. I would prefer to go to a college or university where I could get a minor in something else. My parents and I have a deal that if I go into musical theater I have to have a backup. Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

(I'm sorry if there have been other posts on this before-- like some others I'm a little "search" illiterate!)

Hi b-waybec,

Maybe I can help a little here. My D will also be a senior, and she too wants to pursue an MT major next year. Like you, we recently stumbled across this incredible CC site and are amazed at the info and resources available here.

A couple references I've found particularly useful are on the musical theater FAQ page - http://www.geocities.com/musicaltheatercolleges/index.html

If you haven't already done so, go to the FAQ page and click on the 3rd item down on the left-hand menu.....The Big List. This is a list of colleges that offer undergrad MT degrees. Particularly helpful about this list is that the programs that don't require an audition are indicated with a tilde (~). And conversely, the programs that are highly selective with small enrollments are indicated with a plus sign (+).

Then click on the 3rd menu item from the bottom…..Senior Showcases. This lists the colleges that offer a senior showcase…..typically in NYC. The interesting thing about this list is that it includes a couple non-audition schools from The Big List.

And of course, check out the rest of the FAQ info as well.

Hope this is helpful. And I’m sure more knowledgeable CC members will be along shortly to provide more information. :)

Hi all. I am also a senior, living in NYC and wanting to get out for college haha. Most people want to come here. Anyway, as backup I've heard some on this board mention Mulenburg and Indiana University.

Defying, didn't you do OCU's precollege program this year? If that is, indeed, you, maybe you can post on the "summer experiences" thread to tell us how it went for you.

Thank you all for your comments!

SrMoment-- thank you for describing the Big List system. I have gone to the FAQ many times but somehow missed the description of the tilde!! I felt pretty silly when I read your comment.

Just one more question-- does anyone know anything about the University of Puget Sound program?? Thank you!
