Secondary School Materials

Last week I got sick with a 102-degree fever and am still really sick. This past week was finals week and I was only able to take two of my eight finals. I got a doctor’s note excusing my absence and gave it to my school, but my counselor said that because I was absent and did not take my finals, she can’t submit my transcript, letters of recommendation, counselor report, or school report to the colleges that I am applying to until I make up my finals. However, our winter break lasts until January 14th, so I would only be able to take my finals on that day. This means that my counselor will submit my application materials almost three weeks after the application deadline (January 1/2) for a majority of the schools I am applying to. I am really worried that this is too late to send in my application materials to colleges. My counselor said that most colleges have a two-week grace period, but I am not sure if this is true. Should I call or email the colleges I’m applying to and explain my situation/ask for an extension? I am really worried about this.

For starters, no college expects 1st semester grades with the transcript sent with the application, as most semesters don’t even end until January. That’s why colleges generally require a midyear report. They do however expect a transcript with 1st quarter grades, and being ill still does not explain why they cannot send everything other than the transcript. Time to get a parent involved and escalate over the GC’s head. Good luck.

@skieurope That’s what I thought as well, but my counselor is adamant that she can’t send the additional application materials until I take my finals. My mom had a meeting with the principal yesterday to try to work things out, but he just referred me to my counselor. I guess my question is if it’s okay that my secondary school materials are submitted 2-3 weeks after the application deadline. Should I get in touch with the schools I’m applying to through email just in case?
