Join Bob Saget"s Secret Society Lol

omg Bob Saget -Full House-America's funniest home video's

Resurection. Q&D seems like the most awesome secret society ever.

It's nothing THAT special. I know about 7 people that were tapped this semester. The names of the people that are tapped each semester are printed in an ad in the Sun. They do have pretty nice pins.

I read this thread and still have no idea what they do.

homoerotic hazing, mostly.

Quill and Dagger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sphinx Head - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's basically just a co-ed fraternity of campus leaders that are not allowed to talk about society activities. They get to know each other extremely well during their senior year due to some psychological hazing, and then their connections are used to further careers and the well-being of the University.

It's really arbitrary how members are picked. A lot of members are picked not on character or leadership but due to the fact that their father was in a society, the position on campus they hold (e.g. The Daily Sun EIC is always in Q&D no matter how awful of a tenure they had), or whether or not they have won certain awards (Rhodes, Truman, All-American, etc.).

Someone very close to me had the choice between Q&D and Sphinx Head. He chose Sphinx Head and said it turned out to pretty much be a jock drinking group.

cayugared - add to your list athletes. A surprising amount are simply good and popular athletes. I've known people who have made absolutely stellar advances in research in particular fields as undergrads who were passed right over by the socieities in favor of people like the wrestling team captain.

AppleJack -- Sphinx Head reorganized in 2002-3, so it's basically become a mirror image of Q&D. But yeah, it used to just be a drinking club.

Gomestar -- I agree. Athletes are often tapped due to their All-American status, but others are often either legacy taps or lineage taps. Byron Bitz (former hockey captain) was in Q&D, and he was certainly nothing to write home about.

For what it's worth, I wasn't in either, but I was in a decidedly non-secret Mortar Board, which had a lot of overlap with the more clandestine organizations, for better or for worse.

Once you graduate, you realize how silly it all is. Until you return for reunion or homecoming and see all of the secret society people hanging out with each other.

Cayuga - I'd heard that but didn't know anyone it in when I was there. The person I knew in it was at Cornell many years before I was. Good to hear.

Q&D is leadership and influential based while Sphinx Head is more service based (at least the past few years). Q&D goes after campus leaders such as IFC President, Panhel President, Student Assembly President, Cornell Sun Editor-in-Chief, whoever runs Into The Streets, class council and ivy council members, and this year the captain of the hockey team. Sphinx Head is for people who do service based work and they keep their members a lot more secret.

I also forgot to mention that Chancery (Cornell's oldest secret society) is back on campus and has been for the past few years.

What's chancery and do they have an actually tomb/tower on campus like the other societies. Who reserected it, a former member or just some radom person?
