So, what exactly are the security cameras in the hallways of the academic buildings used for? Is it just for criminal activity or do they also look and see if students are cheating? I know of someone who let 2 girls take a picture of her assignment in a very crowded hallway right before class, but that was 2 weeks ago and the girls didn’t actually end up using the answers anyway, so if the cameras are used to catch cheaters and it managed to pick something up even though there were people everywhere, would they have been caught by now? 2 weeks seems to be a long time.
And there’s really no way to tell if you’re taking a picture with your phone… or anything really.
I knew a few people in undergrad who would take pictures of their papers before turning them in because there was one prof who was notorious for losing papers.
Don’t be paranoid. They’re not looking for “cheaters.” Few college courses really “grade” homework sheets anyway.
Security cameras are for security. The tape may not be viewed unless an incident occurs. If something does occur, the security camera can be a powerful means of getting information about what happened and the participants and witnesses. There are often security cameras in designated test sites.
Cameras are often used in designated test areas and may move or positioned in several places. Filming is less obtrusive than a proctor walking around. I have viewed all sorts of cheating by students who pull out notes, write on themselves and other strategies. It is easy to focus on one or more individuals taking exams at the same time. As the person is leaving, I tell him or her that I suspect cheating. Not me! I show the student what was filmed and then send a copy to faculty for disposition.
Cameras are often a wonderful tool on campus. I am not be concerned about being fi!med. I would prefer not to be taped in the rest room, of course. But security is more important than privacy.
