Security

I've been going over my list of 'stuff to bring to college' and I've gotta wonder - to people really use footlockers (or the like) to protect their stuff - or do you just leave your laptops out like you would at home when you go to a class? I can't see myself locking up my laptop all the time, especially when I know my door will be locked, but my mom seems to think otherwise. I'm going to a decent sized school (15,000 students roughly) so there will definitely be a lot of people floating around, but i'm really not sure if I want to lug a huge footlocker to college! What do you guys do with your valuables - ipods, laptops, etc?

there is a such thing as a laptop lock you know very easy

I just lock my door

It depends on the school. I go to a school where people leave their computers unattended and unlocked for hours at the library, without much risk of theft. So I don't really worry about things in my room - I don't even always lock the door.

I go to a school with roughly 15,000 students. I lock the door to my room when I'm leaving the floor, but just going down the hall I'll leave it unlocked. I do live in the honors dorm though. That being said, I have a laptop lock. It's easy to use, just wrap it around your desk, and connect it to the laptop. Between the locked door, and the laptop lock, I feel pretty secure about it. I do not have a footlocker or anything like that.

My roommate and I agreed at the beginning of the year that we would never leave our door unlocked or open when the room was empty. I haven't had any problems with theft so far

lock your doors, duuuh.

This may sound dumb but what's a footlocker? Is this like a chest with a lock or like a safe that's big enough to hold certain valuables like electronics and money?

By the way, where do people feel more secure leaving their money in dorms?

money--put in wallet. put wallet in drawer of desk.

laptop--put on desk. attach lock. lock door. it's not that difficult.
it would be a hassle to always unlock a footlocker and stuff anyways.

Use an atm when you need money? That money can go into your wallet....

My favorite place for securing valuables is in my car, but in a really strange place. I put little things that may be of great value in the spare tire compartment (it's in the trunk under the actual liner...I have a sedan).

Your laptop may not fit well there unless you take the tire out (which I advise against), but your money, jewelrey, legal documents, and whatnot will.

mactech...

what if your car gets stolen?

My car has a security system.

People ignore security systems beacuse there are so many false alarms and no one wants to be beat up by a car thief.
