Hi,
I am applying for transfer from CA community college to the UC's and CSU's in the fall of 2008 for the 2009-2010 school year. This post only concerns my acceptance at the UC's. More specifically, UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, and UCI.

Units:
74.00 W/ 2 more semesters before transfer (When I transfer, I will be a junior right?). I should also note I will be completing more major prerequisites for a variety of schools in these next two semesters.

GPA:
3.44 (with 5 W's ouch!, I know?!?) (I also got on the Dean's List 3 times, is that an award, and should it be mentioned in my application?) (this low GPA is somewhat a result of my changing my major form Chem to poli sci after my first semester).

Here is my rough transcript from community college:

Note-The transcript reads course, units, then grade. Tu300 is a 0 unit class that allows a student at my community college to receive free tutoring and use the computer lab computers. I also received many units from my AP classes and have completed the IGETC (I think!).

Other: I am really concerned about my essay, because I do not have much to say that is relevant or current or positive. For the past three years, I have basically just gone to school, worked, worked out, and spent the rest of my time alone in my room completing assignments, playing video games, or sleeping.

Thats about all I can think of. I look forward to your replies, and thank you for your time.

If you dont mind me asking, what was your high school cumulative gpa just out of curiosity

Why did you repost your thread again?

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/556967-see-my-info-give-your-advice-please.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/556967-see-my-info-give-your-advice-please.html</a></p>

Xcaliberse:

I actually do not know. At the end of my junior year (high school), I had a 4.15 GPA, or a little better, and I was ranked 10-15 out of a class of around 800 in Orange County. Orange County is similar to some counties in NY where of kids get private tutors, private SAT prep, $20,000 college planning advisors, and other ridiculous assistance. I had none of that, which is not an excuse, but it makes me feel better when I think of all the great schools a lot of my peers got accepted to, while I just went to community college. It is silly that going to a community college is a social stigma in this area, but it still hurts, even if you are a lone wolf like me. Anyway, my peers should be ashamed of themselves if they performed poorly with all that help. I think my final cumulative GPA was like 3.2-3.5. My final rank was like 350-400 or something out of 800 students. Quite a drop, but there were reasons for the madness.

Senior year, I got depressed with all the news out there that even if you had such high grades, you could be denied acceptance to pretty much anywhere. Furthermore, I was basically just a loner bookworm with no EC's. I learned colleges basically hate those kind of people right out of high school.

Finally, I just didn't care anymore, I hated the constant pressure and agony of competition for everything. I was also lacking any sort of motivation, and I did well in school simply to do well. I still believe people should be rewarded for doing an honest job well, but it seems like everything today is focused around "gaming the system" to your advantage. There were never any of the stereotypical dreams and aspirations to back up my motivations. I said to myself, "I don't care, and I am not going to do it anymore." I still lack motivation, and am applying to the UC's largely to satisfy my parents demands. I hope they don't flip if I ask them if I could just go to trade school or something. I do not need some jet set career to satisfy my ego, just something that allows me to support MYSELF ONLY with a modicum comfort and security. It used to be you could get that sort of job with just a high school diploma, but now you are lucky to find such a job with Bachelors.

I did not take the SAT, I basically just made sure i could graduate, and amazingly, I actually received a "D" in my AP Bio and "C" in my AP US Govt class, even though I got a 3 on the AP Bio and a 5 on the AP US Govt exam. I did better on those AP's than a lot of kids who got A's in both classes, especially AP US GOVT. I know a lot of teachers will make an exception if you get a high score on the AP, and will raise your grade to an A or a B, depending on your score and if you pass, but I guess it was Senior year, so it would have been impossible to do that.

Damn, Xcaliberse, why did you make me bring up all this stuff again, it just makes me hate myself more! :P

DAM ITS JOHNNY:

I do not know, I am new to this site, and just posted twice on accident somehow. GOSH, its NOT that BIG OF DEAL! SORRY! I even spent like 15 minutes trying to find a way to delete this post. WOULD LIKE YOUR ADVICE REGARDING MY QUESTION IF YOU HAVE ANY! :P

DAM ITS JOHNNY:
Your profile states you are just a junior member anyway, why would you even waste the time acting like an admin or moderator?

because he is right.

You want answers from a variety of people- that is not likely to happen considering few people that have gone through the process hang around these boards for long periods of time. There is really a handful of people that will offer advise, take it or leave it.

Also you can bump your thread instead of reposting.

I did not repost this on purpose, and if you look at the post time it is close to the other. My PC crashed or something after making the first post, so it could have easily posted again while i waited to see if i actually did need to reboot my PC (which i did about 15 minutes later).

It was an accident. I humbly apologize.

However, feel free to actually give some relevant advice instead of castigating me over my trivial lack of posting acumen.

BTW, I am going to some TAG meeting Malishka31. They say they will Tag certify me, i think. What will this do?

^ there no need to apologize.I was asking because there might be some different info or you bolded important things as someone mention in your other thread to do. Since when people see alot of information there overwhelmed or just lazy to read it all.

Anyways are you asking what the TAG meeting might involve or what tag is in general?

More about what it might involve. I am guessing it might mean I will have to take a few extra specific classes, depending on which school or schools I choose to do the TAG program with.

^ Hard to say it's different. But when i attended a tap meeting last spring they were just talking about what TAP is in general. What the requirements are for it. When to sign up for it and such nothing major if you do a bit of research.

TAP and TAG are different.

TAG is for USCD and UCI and UCD and UCSB but sometimes instead of TAG they are also called TAA or something similar

They stand for Transfer admission alliance, transfer admission guarantee.

TAP -is UCLA and i belive it stands for transfer admission program? not sure on the last word

Anyhow, TAGs and TAAs give you guranteed admission into that university you signed the agreement with- not a gurantee of major in most cases however. You usually have to complete certain courses but they usually overlap with IGETC anyways. You might need a higher math or a bit more bio or some other science but the overlap is significant. At most it is 2-3 courses over IGETC.

TAP for UCLA gives you priority consideration and the choice of an alternate major. It usually requires you to complete X amount of HONORS courses.. at some community colleges it is six honors courses in others it is more. Not everyoen with TAP gets admitted but the probability increases significantly, and the choice of an alternate major at uCLA is a big deal.

^ sorry I meant to say TAG and not TAP. But Malishka31 covered it and I'm sure that's what they will talk about at the TAG meeting.

Seems like the program is pretty irrelevant concerning my situation, as i apply this fall, and i have one more semester, and a summer session before i transfer.

I do not think i will be able (mom prods my back with a bayonet) to spend another year at my community college to satisfy various TAG/TAP requirements.

So, if i have to meet certain prereqs to become TAG/TAP certified, I do not think that i can put i am TAG/TAP certified on my application this fall. Hence, all this advice regarding TAP/TAg is probably pointless, but i will go to the meeting so my mom doesn't skewer me.

Not sure about TAG, but TAP certification is done in the spring and you have until your spring semester to complete TAP (and most likely TAG) requirements. Seeing that you intend to major in political science (impacted) and are applying to UCLA, I suggest you try to get TAP certified.

BTW, here's some info on TAG
<a href="http://www.uctransfer.org/pdf/tag_matrix_and_form.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.uctransfer.org/pdf/tag_matrix_and_form.pdf</a></p>

Another question:

What GPA do schools look at (and use to make their final decision) when you apply for transfer. The gpa up to fall, or up to and including fall (you know how it is said that they ask you for your transcripts again)?

This is pretty serious, because i am 85% (if you could put a number on those sort of things) positive i can boost up my gpa another .1-.2 grade points, putting me at a much more palatable 3.55-3.66.

Read the sticky!
<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/390953-uc-transfer-faq.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/390953-uc-transfer-faq.html</a></p>

It's not that clear, and yes i read that before making the post.

Is that only after they make a preliminary decision that they may want to accept you, or do they send everyone, and mean everyone, a request for that info.
