I am currently a senior and looking into applying for grad schools for next year for Electrical engineering.
I wanted to know which school will be my best bet as far as my GPA and my profile goes.
I am not trying to shoot for the top ranked schools. But I would like to go for at least a decently ranked school.

My profile:

Overall GPA-2.82. Electrical Engineering GPA: 3.02.
3 month internship with a local Electrical engineering related company.
2 extra-curricular EE projects with professors.
2 recommendation letters. (1 from the department chair and other from a professor).
GRE: Taking it in mid-October this year. (Mock GRE scores in the range of 290-300)

Please enlist the graduate schools that would be my best bet to apply for and also their GRE requirements if possible.
My region preference is California, Texas, Arizona, NJ, NY, MA, NC.
Of course I dont mind to know about schools in other regions.

Also, I would like to know some names of schools that I could use as a fall back, in case I dont get accepted in the main stream schools. As I am a F1 student, I need to maintain my status by enrolling in some school.

Ask your professors…they will know for sure. Do not be ashamed of your situation…You are not the first one to be in this situation. Honestly, I would say you should enroll part-time in a post-bac program (if you can with F-1) and get a job that will sponsor an I-9 and after a year or two then choose the right school. Research is good to have but knowing what you want to specialize in is priceless. If you are just trying to stay in-country this is a bad way of doing it. If you must enroll in a program do a 2 year MS in EE at a CSU…choose a small one, most of them have evening courses that let you study and work…Finding a job should be top priority.

Thanks for your reply. Actually i already looked into other options and i’m going to continue looking for a job. But if worst comes to worse, i need a valid admission in hand in order to maintain my status. Its very hard for a international person with bachelor’s degree to get a job. Thats why I need some help with applying for suitable schools. I am currently loking at the CSUs, can you recommend any others?

All the big name schools will require more “requirements” than the CSU’s will…that’s the problem. Also the CSU system usually has rolling semester enrollment…meaning you can get in the following semester after you apply. You meet the CSU GPA requirement, the bigger schools will require a higher GPA. Also try looking for an abroad program for international scholars…at your current schools…you can also lengthen your F-1 if you have some type of on-going scholarship project.

Yes, I already am applying at my current school. But I dont necessarily want to stay at my current school, as the EE program here is mostly related to military and goverment related research. And as an international I dont have much choice for research opportunities. Apart from the CSU’s which other colleges would you recommend? Also, I took some mock GRE tests and managed to score in the range of 145-150 in verbal and 148-155 in quantitative sections. I dont think I will be improving on those scores much on the actual test. Based on the information again, which college would you recommend.

Thank you for your replies.
I recently took the GRE. I unfortunately didnt score too well.
I got a 151 and a 146 … total of 297 combined. I dont remember which one was which. I’ll have to wait till it’s posted on the ETS website.

But based on this score, which other schools apart from the CSU’s would you recommend?
