D was accepted to Furman, invited to scholarship weekend, and ultimately offered a Townes scholarship as an OOS student. Apart from the money, can any current or former Townes/Hollingsworth scholars comment on how this designation has impacted your experience at Furman? Is it something that carries weight (akin to being a prefect, for example), or is it forgotten as soon as you’re admitted? How often are you asked or invited to participate in scholar events during the course of the year? Are these experiences enriching or not? Are you given any special consideration for course selection? Any other thoughts are also welcome. Thanks in advance for your input!
My daughter is a Hollingsworth scholar. Each semester there is a nice dinner for just the named scholars in conjunction with Riley Institute programs which bring in nationally known speakers. The scholars get to have dinner in a small setting to meet and talk personally with the speakers. I am not sure what other things they may do but my daughter has raved about what a great opportunity the dinners are.
@buddyparent Thanks very much for the input. The dinners sound like very nice experiences. If you have an opportunity to ask your daughter about any other feedback she has about being a Hollingsworth scholar, I would love to hear it!
@Silopanna Judging by your user name, Silopanna, - I’m guessing we live near each other. I’m in central Maryland, and you can guess where I work from my username - I graduated from Furman in the 90’s, one of my sons is a sophomore at Furman now. Although my son is not a Townes scholar (I actually met Charles Townes while I was at Furman - he was a great person!), if you have other questions that a family near by can possibly answer, just reach out to me.
