Seeking music field career path advice

Ever since I was young, I've been great with math and science and pushed in that direction academically. Aside from that I'm very passionate about music, but was never really given an opportunity to pursue it in school, so I've self taught myself both digital and live performance concepts over the past fourish years. The college process rolled around and I applied to colleges to get a degree in engineering, and now I find myself at in the second month of my sophomore year studying electrical engineering, focusing on audio and acoustics at a top 10 engineering school. I figured this way I could combine what I've always performed very well in academically with industry I'm very interested in professionally.

This being said, I'm not very happy with my academic life because I find myself uninterested and bored by a large majority of my classes. I constantly feel like I am wasting my time just waiting for a class to come my way that I actually enjoy and can dive into, but that hasn't happened thus far. I find my classes lacking the creativity that I seek as I just learn more math and science every day and week, and I fear that if I don't act soon I'll just become more unhappy with the academic side of my college experience.

Because of this, I've been considering transferring to a different school, University of Illinois, to pursue a degree in music technology. Its a brand new program that deals with the technical, not the performance aspect, of music. I feel like this calls to me much more than what I am currently pursuing, but because of the type of the degree it is I am having a hard time figuring stuff out. On one hand, it would be instate so I'd be paying less money and I'd probably be substantially happier in my studies, but I'd be going from a strong degree in engineering to a much less valuable degree in music technology, meaning that post college finding work is going to get much more difficult.

I just always find myself wondering how much is putting up with the engineering grind worth it if I'm not interested in it post college. But the the problem becomes what do I do, if not music or engineering, because one doesn't guarantee job security, and the other doesn't make me happy.

So I guess I'm interested in what some of you have to say about my thoughts. Is it better to stick out and endure this for another 2.5 years, or should I legitimately consider jumping ship and transferring?

I went through this same confused thought process last year, but was talked out of it by my parents for the aforementioned reasons, but the feelings just keep coming back.

If you are genuinely unhappy pursuing an engineering major, chances are you will be unhappy working in the field as well. I would take the risk and transfer (If I were in your position). BUT as you probably know, it’s difficult to succeed in the music industry. I had many friends in college who were sound recording technology majors. While getting a good education is important, it’s all about networking and getting hands on experience. Now, all of my friends at least landed internships (two of which turned into full time employment.) One builds guitars and speakers at Moog and the other works in Hollywood (not sure what the company is). I think if you’re persistent and make the right connections you will have no trouble being successful in the music industry. I say go for it!
