Seeking tips on college selection for Pharmacy/Pharmacology degree

My daughter a senior, is getting ready to start sending out applications especially for the Early Action ones. To give you a quick run down of her profile, academic and extracurricular: She has a 3.86 GPA(she has AP subjects in everything that offers the AP level instruction), and has just written her SAT today. Her best score so far in the new SAT is 1910 broken down as 700 verbal, 640 math and 570 writing. She will get good teacher recommendations and has been involved in Multi-Cultural clubs, track and other community/school activities. She intends to do a doctorate in pharmacy, and with some luck we are hoping she can get a scholarship to a school which offers her the 6 year program. Her choices are 1. UVA ( we live in northern Virginia, maybe only as an undergrad) 2. Yale(she is thinking of having the Early Action, though I hear its limiting when it comes to YU) 3. James Madison 4. Howard University (If she gets the scholarship for the 6 year Pharmacy program). She is open to other colleges not too far away from VA but we are not quite sure how to go about it. Of course the deciding factor in going out of state is a scholarship, and realistically even if not a strong contender, she is not totally out of reckoning. If someone has thoughts/feedback on this please let us know, we would much appreciate any help we get as far as 1) College selection 2) Chances of getting scholarship in the pharmacy program 3) Financial aid especially for colleges out of state. Thanks in advance.

This is really sort of off topic, but the most creative piece of college mail I've received is from a pharmacology school...it was a huge perscription bottle with a message inside. Sorry...didn't mean to hijack the thread!

Well...it IS far away but the University of Rhode Island has a great pharmacy program. Plus one of their alums is the CEO of one of the huge chain pharmacies. They have a 100% job placement rate. Tuition is modest and my guess is your daughter would receive a terrific merit aid package. But it is in Rhode Island which is not near where you are.

Just an FYI...there is a 6-year PharmD program at the University of Pittsburgh. Many of the top students from the high school I attended ended up in this program and should be graduating at the end of this year.

Conditional Admission to this program for 2007 includes:

Enroll at one of Pitt's campuses
top 10% of high school class
Score 1250 combined on Math/Verbal SAT
Score 650 on Math SAT
Specify Pharmacy on Application

If she ups the Math by 10 pts which shouldnt be a problem, she can be guarenteed admission to this program

Pitt alum. '04
UNC-CH grad student

We have started looking at Rhode Island University. That was good input....appreciate your taking the time to respond.

Not Rhode Island University....University of Rhode Island...I believe both exist....

Your advise to look at the University of Pittsburg's program is much appreciated. As far as getting in based on her current SAT scores, I'm hoping that yesterday's SAT has bumped her up. Adding 10 more points is definitely within her grasp but will probably know for sure in 2 weeks. Thanks again for taking the trouble to respond.
