My plane didn’t have HBO and I don’t have it at home either. That would have made the endless flight better. I watched about half of Jackie, but it was so sad and her accent was so off putting, even if accurate, I started searching for a comedy.
The movie group I organize is seeing The Zookeepers Wife next weekend.
Late to the party here, but I just saw Rogue One and I thought it was really great. Loved the characters, loved the themes, (had to turn from some of the violence but that’s me). It really sets up Episode IV. I also found myself making tons of historical and literary reference, which is fun. Also I watched with my S who is an encyclopediac expert on all things SW, which was useful. Found it unexpectedly moving, overall.
Finally got around to seeing Before Sunrise after about a kajillion CC posts recommending the trilogy. We’ll be watching the other installments. My DH thought it was a lot like My Dinner with Andre, except, sexier. Julie Delphy looks just like a Botticelli painting.
^@mathmom, Julie Delpy has the most amazing-looking arms in Before Sunrise.
^@garland, I also watched Rogue One with my son, who insisted that I see it. I was surprised how much I liked it, I hadn’t cared much for The Force Awakens/
Have taken several long distance flights recently and watched:
Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children- liked it. Jackie- turned to another movie
LaLa Land- enjoyed it
Lion- liked it
Fantastic Beasts- liked
Manchester by the Sea- couldn’t get past the first 15 minutes
Assassin’s Creed- weird, but wanted to see a different genre than I usually like
The Accountant- like
Arrival- did not like
Allied- ok for the plane
Rules Don’t Apply- meh
Man, your flight had much better selection of movies than ours! Would like to see Lion and LaLa Land on plane–maybe next month will have better selection. Didn’t really know what to expect with Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children but both H and I really enjoyed it, as well as Fantastic Beasts. There will be future sequels to Fantastic Beasts.
These movies were spread out over Delta, United and Jet Blue. Just flew Delta from SFO to TPA yesterday, the flight attendants were so lovely, happy and very helpful to passengers. They were thanking their higher mileage passengers and inviting others to join their frequent flyer programs. A stark difference to the United flight the week prior.
Finally saw Manchester by the Sea with DH. I was extremely skeptical, but we actually really liked it. I think for a movie like this, you have to be prepared for the tone and in the right mood to see it. I’m usually in a great mood going to a movie theatre, and most likely would have been extremely disappointed expecting one this and viewing this. But we knew about the extreme sadness and watched at home, on a chilly day. I also wasn’t in a great mood, so instead of making me sad, it made me thoughtful. Same with DH.
I just watched Get Out. Quite remarkable. I was initially turned off by the idea that it was a “horror” movie–I really hate them–but it isn’t. Food for thought.
I thought “Get Out” didn’t live up to the hype and was incredibly boring. I was probably expecting too much.
The last good movie I saw was “Great Wall”, which got terrible reviews, but it was still entertaining and better than the last half-dozen movies I’ve seen.
H and I went to “A Quiet Passion” last weekend. It stars Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson. Definitely not an action movie, but I found it interesting. Such a different time and way of life.
I also watched a ton of in-flight movies over the past month. I caught up with Moana, Sausage Party (loved it), Keeping Up With The Joneses (really loved it), Someone (good contemporary Japanese movie in the Reality Bites vein), some Japanese not-quite rom-com about a gay man and a career woman sharing a flat, Revenge (Japanese thriller), Fences (August Wilson WAS the American Shakespeare).
I watched a movie on HBO a couple of weeks ago - “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” It was excellent. S17 watched it with me and about 5 minutes in, he began texting his friends telling them to turn it on and watch it.
