Really enjoyed The Edge of Seventeen… Hailee Steinfeld is glorious in it.
@Barbalot, an oldie but goodie: While You Were Sleeping.
More recent but not new:
It’s Complicated
The Holiday
Something’s Gotta Give
The Big Sick is phenomenal.
For those who like all the movies that Nrdsb4 mentioned in #601, Nancy Meyers has a new movie coming in September starring Reese Witherspoon. It’s called Home Again and the trailer is out there for all to enjoy.
Florence Foster Jenkins was very well done by Merle Streep and the others.
Mamá Mía has peppy music.
@2VU0609, I love Nancy Meyers films. If nothing else, I can spend a couple of hours admiring the beautiful homes, settings, and cinematography that are hallmarks of her movies.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I was looking forward to seeing The Big Sick, but now I don’t think I can deal with a movie set in a hospital since I’m spending all too much time in one myself. What I need are some current movies like “You’ve Got Mail,” “Notting Hill,” “While You Were Sleeping,” etc. I guess I’m stuck in the '90s!
LOL, when I looked at lists of rom-coms, I realized the 90s really were a golden age for them. (And the 30s.) If she hasn’t seen them, you could do worse! I’m sure 30 years from now someone will be saying “They just don’t make superhero movies like they did back in the 2010’s”
An oldie - sitting here paying bills and watching Doubt. Superb acting all around. Sure do miss Phillip Seymour Hoffman and his acting talent.
Here are some recent movies that I’ve enjoyed that are reasonably uplifting: “Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot”; “Obvious Child”; “Sing Street”; “Brooklyn”; “Learning to Drive”; “Break Point”; “A Walk in the Woods.” And one old and very uplifting: “My Brilliant Career.”
We recently saw Baby Driver - the movie was good, I liked the car scenes. The plot was just average. Took the H and S to see Spiderman last night. H is a huge comic book collector and came away from the movie not liking certain aspects- related to spidey’s suit… Since I don’t follow the comic scene, I thought the movie was funny and good. Stay to the very end, as there is something funny to see.
Yes, I’m an adult in my late 50’s.
And I loved Cars 3 yesterday. so did my husband and 17 year old daughter.
I loved Cars 3 as well!
so did my 14 y/o.
Btw, this may surprise some, but I thought Snatched (Goldie and Amy) was worth the ticket price. That’s not to say it was great or an all time fav. But when it comes up on Netflix or Hulu, it won’t even cost that. Amusing enough.
Saw Beatriz at Dinner. I thought it was excellent, superb acting and writing. Not for those looking for something cheery, though.
We just came from The Big Sick. Husband and I both loved it!
We just took our 14-year-old to see the new Spider-Man. It was nice, but seemed long. I still think of Michael Keaton as one of the Batmans (among other things), but he did well as the villain in this. Not as good as Wonder Woman, but watchable.
MI liked The Big Sick. Sweet, nice, humor, pathos. Helen hunt was terrific, followed by Ramon’s and the pakistanian mom. Actually, each part was well played, which includes the fellow comedians. A little slow at times, but lovely.
I’m looking forward to seeing The Big Sick when it opens around here. As an NPR devotee, I’ve heard a lot about it.
Has anyone seen the new Sam Elliot movie, Hero?
We watched a Redbox DVD of The Zookeeper’s Wife, which is based on the true story of the couple who saved about 300 Jewish people from the Nazis in Warsaw. It was riveting.
