Seen any good movies lately?

Thought Jeff Goldblum in Ragnarok was hilarious. Enjoyed Justice League but all the previous trailers left you with the feeling that you had already seen the movie.

During Thor I LOL’d at the Banner PhD jokes. And more times.

Last night I watched The Dressmaker on Amazon Prime. Unusual movie that took quite a shift in the middle that took me aback. The costumes were stunning. Kate Winslet and Judy Davis were excellent, Hugo Weaving was a hoot, and Thor’s brother Liam was eminently watchable.

@Marilyn - D1 and I watched The Dressmaker a few months ago and really enjoyed it.

The Man Who Invented Christmas is a take on A Christmas Carol.
For teens and above who have studied Charles Dickens in high school or seen the play on stage.
Younger will be bored with too much talking by the actors.
The darker anguished childhood of CD and his issues with his father drive the story.
Cast well.

I highly recommend Coco! DH, DS and I saw it yesterday and all loved it. Very charming, poignant Pixar movie about Dia de los Muertos–as good as (or maybe even better than) Inside Out.

D and I just saw Coco tonight. It was very good. Word of warning- there was a Frozen short movie (about 30 minutes) after the previews and before Coco. I could have done without the Frozen movie. ugh.

@Mom2jl, would a 6 y/o enjoy Coco?

There was a 5 or 6 yo girl in the theater with us- she seemed to enjoy it. She talked back at the screen in a couple places- it was quite cute.

From all the accounts I’ve read and friends who have seen it, that Frozen short film before Coco is universally disliked.

I don’t know why my comment from yesterday posted again! I have to agree that the Frozen short before the movie wasn’t that great, and could have been a lot shorter. I think it’s probably okay for younger children, although depending on the child, some of it might be a bit scary.

Is it Olaf-centric? (Somehow I thought I’d heard an Olaf-centric film was being made but… not up to date on the latest Let is goooooo’s)

I saw The Post last night and it is AMAZING. Seeing Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks act together is like… I never knew I wanted it so badly, but it’s my new favorite thing. I just love both of them so much.

^it came out already? Good news!

@rebeccar, I’m so glad to hear your review of The Post. It is the one movie I am most looking forward to during the next month or so. Looks like national release isn’t until after New Years Day. It’s going to be hard to wait on this one!

Classof2015, it doesn’t come out until next month but my fiance is a journalist so we get to go to press screenings! Although he just informed me there’s an embargo on talking about it until next week, whoops :-" But I will say that the idea of the press being a critical function of democracy in revealing corruption and letting the masses know what’s happening behind closed doors… it all feels very, very timely and relevant.

@rebeccar - lucky you!

Just saw Three Billboards. A little disappointed. Felt kind of heavy handed. Too many speeches. The humor at times felt off key. When “Red” was talking, I needed subtitles. Pamela (his assistant) had a small role but she either is a bad actress or walked in from another movie. Two product placements (JIF peanut butter; Froot Loops) that were pretty obvious. It was strong, powerful, gripping - but not as good as Wind River (that’s just my opinion).

Loving Vincent
Visually stunning as the first film that is entirely hand painted.
Even though you may be the biggest Van Gogh fanboy as apparently 20 sets of grandmas and grandads were… the story lagged and put some of them to sleep.
A good part not to be missed is the closing credits…matching the persons in Van Gogh’s paintings with the actors and a nice rendition of Don McLean"s “Starry Starry Night”

The LA Film Critics Award for Best Picture was awarded to “Call Me By Your Name”, a story about love between a 17 year old and a 24 year old. I like Armie Hammer (he’s very nice to look at) but the subject matter of an adult and a teenager hooking up makes me squeamish.

Saw Wild River (2017) with Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner, highly recommend, its On Demand right now.
