^ Wind River (not Wild). As in the huge Indian reservation in central Wyoming.
Saw the remake of Murder on the Orient Express this weekend, sumptuously filmed but not an especially good movie. You can wait on this one. Apparently this is a new franchise in development for Kenneth Branagh in the making as next up is Murder on the Nile…
Saw Three Billboards and thought it was brilliantly acted but not as impressed with the story. Some points seemed very unlikely. But Frances McDormand was incredible. Definitely a lot of plot twists and violence.
@rebeccar I was wondering how you saw The Post already. I live in DC and it’s not here yet and not much in the actual Post about it either.
She went to a special screening for the press but wasn’t suppose to talk about it…
JHS – I bet since NEPatsGirl saw the movie she knows it’s named after the reservation. Innocent typo.
mom2and – you articulated what I didn’t write about Three Billboards – lots of plots twists (some organic; some less so). And definitely lots of violence (at least three times I couldn’t look at the screen). Harrelson was great. McDormand very good.
@Barbalot see post #817
@beerme to be clearer, I was mostly kidding. It just means that movie critics aren’t allowed to publish their reviews or articles until a certain date. It’s not a secret that I saw it and think Streep and Hanks are amazing. Embargoes are usually used strategically if studios want all the “buzz” to happen around a certain time, or more interestingly, if they know the movie sucks and don’t want all the critics talking about how bad it is for a whole month before the movie releases. Then the embargo date might be, say, the day before the movie is released.
@Classof2015, thanks for having my back lol.
Just spoke with S and he mentioned a movie he saw recently, compared it to Wind River but said it was even better – Sicario, apparently about Special Ops and the Mexican cartel. I’ll be looking for it later tonight.
@NEPatsGirl – as long as we don’t talk about sports, we’ll get along just fine Thanks for the tip on Sicario. Is it out in theatres? Definitely sounds interesting.
In case anyone missed it when it came out a few years ago, Frozen River (also set near an Indian reservation) with Melissa Leo was very good. Should be available on Prime or Netflix.
We watched “Baby Driver” last night. Wow, intense movie! I loved seeing Jon Hamm in such a different role from his one in “Mad Men.” The chase and crash scenes were awesome, too.
It’s hardly an accident if someone likes both Wind River and Sicario. Taylor Sheridan, who wrote and directed Wind River, also wrote the screenplay for Sicario, and the two films have a bunch in common, including the theme of an innocent but strong young female police officer (in this case Emily Blunt) working alongside a hyper-experienced older officer (Benicio del Toro) who uses extra-legal methods, is haunted by his past, and has ambiguous membership in the culture they are policing. Sicario is about three years old, so it’s not in theaters anywhere.
I agree with @MaineLonghorn about Baby Driver. I would have been happy to live the rest of my life without watching another car-chase scene, but Baby Driver somehow managed to freshen the tired conventions. And it made me actually pay attention to Ansel Elgort. It turned out that I had seen him in a whole bunch of movies, but I had never really focused on him before.
I’m glad several posters mentioned the violence in Three Billboards. I may take that one off the list. A GF & I were looking for something to see this Friday night.
Made a point to see Coco before they yanked the much reviled Olaf short shown before the movie.
Olaf may be the Jar Jar Binks of Disney but at least there wasn’t an ear worm song in the movie short to haunt you after you leave the theater…Let It G…not going to ruin your day…
The soundtrack of Coco was as awesome as the visuals which were fantastic.
Anthony Gonzalez… what a beautiful voice.
Went to see “Coco” last night. Geez, that “short” went on and on and on… We made it through about 15 minutes of the main attraction before DH decided he’d had enough. Oh, well… I really thought he would like it since he plays classical and flamenco guitar.
The Shape of Water…add to your list of movies to see since it will get Oscar buzz.
Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon, the asset …wow.
The soundtrack is haunting, set design outstanding, every detail visually important.
Violence, couple scenes of self love so for mature teen and above.
Lucky to see it with less than 30 people in the audience, the perfect crowd size to watch an engrossing movie.
It’s not a hairpiece.
It’s a toupee.
It’s French.
My daughter, the biggest disney fan in the world, didn’t like the Olaf ‘short’ and didn’t really like Coco.
Wife and I have MoviePass (which I highly recommend) and have been watching more movies than before. We really did not like the Olaf short movie and Coco was ok but disappointing we thought.
I’ve been recommending The Florida Project to anyone who has a chance to see it. It’s not in wide distribution.
One of those ones you just can’t get out of your head!
Took great auntie and her friends to see Getting Started with Tommy Lee and Morgan Freeman… the ladies big fangirls of the 2 actors.
The movie was so terrible.
It has a Christmas bent but this will not join any list of beloved Christmas movies…only the horrible list.
Rene Russo, Glenne Headly and an assortment of other character actors all collecting paychecks.
The ladies were bitterly disappointed…Star Wars will bring them back to the movies…
