I think they view themselves more as a wanna be Evil Empire. Enslaving and torturing people, forcing ideology and blind obedience to the point of death, killing indiscriminately, including women and children…sounds like they want to be the Empire, not the Resistance.
They couldn’t cut Leia scenes quickly enough for me. As sad as her death was, every word she spoke sounded as if she was severely congested, it was hard to listen to. I didn’t see anything that came across as genuine emotion from her, though I don’t know if I ever have. Mark Hamill did better work than he did in the other movies, for sure.
@ChuckleDoodle - I just saw a picture of the Laura Dern hair color you admire - This has been my hair color for 3 years now (really) - I love it! It took some time to get just the right shade (a very greyish lavender) but once we got it (my hairdresser and I) it has stuck. My employer was a little taken aback at first, but he’s known me for 20 years, and we work in a creative environment (urban design). I think my favorite compliment was when we had clients come in from Japan. Very conservative, 3 men, one woman, all in their late 40s I assume (I’m almost 60). She never spoke, the men lead the discussion. At the end of the meeting as they were leaving, she walked by and said “I love your hair!” Of course my boss had to pipe in with something along the lines of ‘we all love it too’ - My hair is almost shoulder length, and naturally curly at the last 4-5 inches. Something like this (I don’t purse my lips though! ) http://www.short-haircut.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Short-Bob-Layered-Curly-Haircuts.jpg and the color is quite similar to this http://pophaircuts.com/images/2016/06/Medium-Curly-Hairstyle-with-Smokey-Lavender-Hair-Color-Medium-Haircuts-for-Women-2017.jpg
Just a mom, that haircut is gorgeous and I like the color.
I’m still thinking about JHS’ post 917. I believe in the virtue of the Jedi, but they can be seen as zealots to,others. Of course, I know it’s fiction.
Regarding the comments that Lady Bird couldn’t be at NYU because they wouldn’t have given her enough aid, I thought it couldn’t be Barnard, because as a senior in high school she was still taking
Algebra II!
And I thought it couldn’t be NYU because the admit packet was blue, not purple! The things we notice.
D2 and I just watched Dunkirk. Wow. I’m glad we saw it on a TV set; I think a big screen in a theater would have been too intense.
Well, my Barnard alum daughter never took any high school math beyond Algebra II, and that didn’t stop Barnard from admitting her- 4 years down the line from the movie character, when Barnard’s admit rate had tightened up significantly … so no, that would not be a barrier to admission. (Especially with the waitlist thing)
My DD was admitted to NYU as well… but I have no recollection whatsoever of the color of the admission packet At the time, the only thing I was interested in was the page with the financial aid award in any case. Barnard’s was green (metaphorically).
And NYU definitel would not have offered Lady Bird any financial aid at all coming off the waitlist.
We saw The Shape of Water yesterday. It was very good, but very strange. There is a lot to unpack with this movie. Lots to discuss after the movie. They call it an adult fairy tale.
Saw Darkest Hour with the whole family yesterday and we all enjoyed it. (We all wanted to see The Post but it was is only in limited release and was not playing near us) However, Darkest Hour is the type of movie you could watch on TV at home and it wouldn’t lose too much.
Another no vote for Downsizing. I thought the premise of shrinking the human population to prevent environmental catastrophe was intriguing, and the Washington Post gave it four stars. It started off OK, but went off the rails about halfway in.
I’m so disappointed I, Tonya is not playing near us. Looks like we will see Call Me By Your Name this weekend.
Three Billboards - Two thumbs up
Another vote for Molly’s Game - Jessica Chastain was excellent! I highly recommend the movie. It was fascinating and I just downloaded the book. To me, that’s the sign of a good film, when you leave the theater wanting to know more…
Took my great auntie and her group to see Father Figures, they are big fangirls of Christopher Walken…
Predictable, chock full of cliches, but the group thought the few laughs made it enjoyable enough…
Christopher Walken got…old.
Ed Helms and Owen Wilson had chemistry and make a good buddy paring for future movies.
Saw Star Wars today. I had high expectations based on the positive reviews. The movie was good, not great. I thought the Rose Tico character was terrific and deserves a bigger role in the next movie.
^^My entire family did not like the Rose Tico character at all in Star Wars. While she had some good moments, most of them we thought were very bad.
The Greatest Showman has just become my new favorite movie.
I liked the script and the acting in Molly’s Game, but not so much that I want to read more about Molly Bloom. Very enjoyable film.
D and saw Call Me By Your Name. We liked it. Tugged at our hearts. We both thought Timothée Chalamet gave an amazing, award winning performance.
The people in front of us complained the movie was too slow. Yes, it’s one of those “quiet” movies. Not your typical mainstream American film.
