I thought The Post was about a typical underappreciated woman who had been relegated to the role of society hostess finally found her voice and strength of convictions by being put into a crisis situation. It was really more of a character study than some big movie about publishing the Pentagon Papers. I didn’t feel like I was being beat over the head with some agenda.
Upcoming previews of Red Sparrow with Jennifer Lawrence looks like a must see.
We tried to see Shape of Water last night, but all but the 10pm showing was sold out, so we saw the Commuter with Liam Neeson instead
We love Liam Neeson who is in every scene. It held our attention and was action packed, good story line. Throw in nicely popped hot buttered popcorn and flat bread pizza and it was a good evening, We were out by 7:30pm and didn’t have to interrupt our sleep schedule. All in all worth seeing if you like Liam.
I really enjoyed The Post. Agree with mathmom—the film’s focus was on Katherine Graham becoming her own woman and making a tough decision that many of the men around her (who treated her like a figurehead) advised against.
I went to see The Post with H and another couple. All 4 of us really enjoyed it and thought it showed the character development of Katharine during tough times. We all thought it was a great and timely piece with excellent acting. Actually, it was uplifting to us and helped us keep optimistic. I don’t see why it has to be pitted against Spotlight, which was also excellent, just a different story. Both were very good but different.
Saw The Phantom Thread last night. Definitely not the same movie that the trailer portrays imho. Daniel Day Lewis was fabulous and the costumes were great. I just didn’t think it was best picture worthy.
I have some specific/character plot issues but don’t want to spoil anything. Curious to hear I others liked it
Saw the Shape of Water the other night and was so disappointed. I really had high expectations for it, and convinced a group to see it. No one liked it. It was so formulaic, you could predict all the plot points. Really enjoyed Dunkirk though, so that will be the one I am rooting for.
I saw The Shape of Water this afternoon. It was definitely good, but not up to the standard of Pan’s Labyrinth IMHO. Nor did I think it quite up to the standard of Arrival, actually. I started thinking about the casting of Olivia Spencer and Sally Hawkins–did anyone else see her in Happy-Go-Lucky? – and about the fact that the aquaman seemed to definitely by a “white” man, and all kinds of related things. What if those casting choices had been different…
I saw Dunkirk a while ago. It is absolutely a big screen movie. I can’t imagine seeing it on a TV or laptop. Very well made in various ways, but also very conventional in many ways.
So far, Get Out remains my favorite of the contenders, even though it is nowhere near as “big” a piece of film-making.
This week I’m hoping to see some more of the nominated movies, esp 3 Billboards and Ladybird.
My Oscar list in order.
1,Three Billboards
2,The Post
3,Darkest hour
4,Call me by your name.
5,The Phantom Thread
6,Lady Bird
7,The shape of Water
8, Get Out
And I haven’t seen Dunkirk.
Totally irrelevant to anything, but it turns out his mother is someone my wife and I knew in college. Not a super-close friend (obviously, or we would have been following her son’s career for longer), but a classmate of my wife’s in the residential college of which we were both members. Chalamet’s mother was a multiple-threat kind of person, too: actress/dancer/singer and very smart. She had a decent career as a dancer on and off Broadway, and has had a leadership role in Actor’s Equity.
Saw a pix of Timothee and his mom…she is petite…both of her kids are actors with 2017 the year her son broke out with roles in 3 acclaimed movies…he was also in Homeland…
The talented apple didn’t fall far from the talented tree.
@beerme have not watched Maudie but it is definitely on the Netflix queue. Like several movies Sally Hawkins is in, she is always so unconsuming yet brilliant. Just saw her in “the shape of water”, she so deserves a bigger recognition, like an Oscar nod, though I doubt she will get one for her mesmerizing portrait of Elisa. Can never forget her Happy go Lucky role either.
Saw Three Billboards today. Lived up to the hype in my book. Very original script. Excellent acting from the leads to the smallest roles. Touching at times, laugh out loud funny many times even during scenes when you feel guilty for laughing, definitely violent in parts.
re: Timothee Chalamet – I googled him (I was pretty sure he was in Lady Bird – didn’t see the other films) and found his bio on imdb. If he was born in 1995, how could he have had a major role in Law & Order in 1990? That IS real talent! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3154303/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm
@mommdc The Sound of Music is one of my favorite movies of all time! I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen it, but it’s probably at least 20 or 25 times.
Clicked on the link above then clicked on his name and scrolling down… his Law and Order episode is listed in 2009.
He was in Lady Bird as the guy in the band, LB went to see play.
A Ghost Story on Netflix was released in theaters last July is a movie that 2 people sitting side by side will come away with totally different reactions to the movie.
4 main reactions…Loved it…hated it…bored…What was that all about?
