I have been selected for augmented review! I thought this was not going to happen to me.

this soon? do you know for what reason?

I probably do know why, but I guess already this soon. I have to fill out a questionnaire, send my fall grades (if available), and it is optional to send a recommendation.

what are they looking for? is it a random thing, or are you "picked"

what does augmented review mean?

^yeah I have the same question

The term is used in the University of California system for additional information that they seek to make the decision on a small pool of applicants right in the grey area between admit and reject. For example, Berkeley sends out several types of augmented reviews -- disability, talent and academic -- for only a few percent of all applicants, those that are otherwise ranked right at the cutoff score.

If someone reported that they overcame some disability, they would get the disability questionnaire. Someone with a special talent, for example winner of a national violin competition, would be asked more about that in a talent questionnaire. Otherwise, Cal asks about the background of academic performance, perhaps why the student didn't take all the AP courses offered at their school.

In addition to a questionnaire, generally there is a request for a reference from a teacher or counselor or coach. UCB stresses that the evaluation of the additional information will never harm someones case or lower their ranking for admission, but it often raises them up; thus they might get admitted rather than rejected solely due to their response to the augmented review.

then its a good thing?

The Cal admissions people say again and again that the augmented review CANNOT hurt you, it can only help bolster your application.

well it can be a good thing. The point being is that they are looking for reasons to admit you.; if they wanted to deny you, they would have. For example, if you are extremely low income and had to work 40 hours a week during school, they could explain away a lower gpa or curriculum rigor, relative to the other applicants.

Time to peform a core dump -- send 'em everything you can.

Good luck.

"Core Dump"
hahaha
Well thanks for the luck
