I got an email from admissions asking me to fill out a supplemental app for my disability. My question is, isn't everyone that discloses a medical problem/disability get one? If so, does this mean that they are just following protocol and I am not in the "maybe" pile. Am I getting my hopes up for nothing?

^The disability one of these seems to be sent out to all applicants who indicated a disability on their app. I think they are just following protocol–however, you can’t have already been rejected or they wouldn’t be bothering, right?

You are in the augmented review “pile”. I guess you could call it the “maybe” pile. It is certainly not the “reject” pile, so you should be pleased and optimistic. Follow everything that is asked of you and do it timely. Good luck!

at UCLA77: Are you positive that I am in the augmented review pile? If so, I am very, very pleased! Although, I think leafblade might have a point. Can anyone confirm?
Oh and, thanks for the super speedy responses! :]

We don’t have enough reports to tell for sure. The disability review is not the same as the regular borderline review document, which absolutely is for those on the cusp.

However, lets think this through. Cal, unlike most other universities, does not accept recommendation letters or official transcripts. It does this to reduce the workload. Verification of transcripts is only done for those they know are accepting a place in the incoming class, rather than for everyone.

If they send a disability supplemental to every applicant that mentions one, even those who are not going to be offered a spot, they are adding all those recommendations and grade reports and the extra review time. Seems to me that you must have a better than average chance if they sent the request. Depending upon the answers, they can see giving you a thumbs up.

A regular ‘borderline’ supplemental seems to come with a 50-50 probability of admissions. The ‘talent’ one, assuming you do have a significant talent and can reflect that in the additional information you send, has a considerably higher probabiity of admissions. No idea for the ‘disability’ supplemental request, but a good working guess is that it is also a 50-50 shot.

If I were you, I would be pleased as this is a decent omen. No guarantee of a yes, but they think you could benefit from a Cal education and provide a richer and more diverse experience to everyone by joining the incoming class. It is a maybe, much better than a no.

The disability questionnaire goes out to every applicant who has indicated disability in his/her application. The questionnaire is optional and you can decline to elaborate on your disability, in which case your application will be reviewed on its own merit. If you provide additional information, the application will be reviewed in context of the information you provide. At this point, you are not so much “borderline” as “undecided.”

Disability does go into augmented review. They ask about 5 - 7 additional questions. They ask for a teacher recommendation. They ask for your disability records (i.e. IEP and the like). They ask for your fall grades. The review is comprehensive.

I have only heard about the talent supplemental but haven’t seen the questions. You can usually get an idea of what the campus is getting at by looking at how the questions are phrased. I’d be happy to offer my interpretation if you want to post the questions.

If anyone here has gotten one of those “borderline” supplemental questionnaires, would you mind posting the types of questions it asks? I would just like to know seeing as I may be borderline myself… thx
