Selected for verification but no requests from schools for information

We were selected for verification (I learned this from the FAFSA site). However, every school my son applied to is a CSS Profile school and as a result they already have our tax returns for the past two years, W2s, son's taxes, and probably our full genome and a kidney.

As a result only the one non-CSS school asked for anything extra (taxes).

Will they ask us for anything? Will only the schools who offer him admissions request more materials?

There isn't much I can think of to ask for...it's all pretty basic for our taxes and finances.

If you were selected for verification, all schools will have to verify you according to federal guidelines. However, there are several different categories of verification this year … it is possible to be verified & not asked for income info. If your selection has to do with income items, you will need to do a direct IRS transfer to the FAFSA or provide a tax transcript to all schools. If you have not yet been officially accepted, you would most likely not be asked for that info yet. Once you are accepted, you would be asked to provide verification info - which would include some type of form.

Note: It is possible to be selected for verification by the federal processor but not be selected by the school. Some schools are in a special program with the Dept. of Ed. in which they choose their own populations to verify. For the most part, though, if you are selected, you’ll be verified. Like I said, it won’t always be for income items. Sometimes it is for other things - students are even being asked to prove their identity this year!

Do you need to respond to verification requests from schools you choose not to attend?

Thanks Kelsmom

Now I am wondering where my son’s has most recently lost his ID!

Which reminds me of a story: My sister was driving to Canada and at the border crossing both her kids were crying, fussing in the back seat. They had passports but have their dad’s last name so the name didn’t match up with my sister’s. The border guard ask her if she could prove the kids were hers. She looked at him incredulously “who else would want them?!”

Now I am curious about what they will ask for but with admissions being so competitive maybe we won’t have to deal with it :D

Caesar, no.

Jamiecakes, cute story! And don’t worry about the verification stuff. It’s usually pretty easy to comply.

Jamiecakes, both of our kids were marked for verification this year (first time ever for both, non-CSS), and we have not received additional requests for any verification materials, either. I’m thinking that maybe once we were able to use the IRS tool that that satisfied it, but I’m not sure.

I keep checking to see if we have missed something but there is nothing in their emails, our mail, or online on their accounts. So maybe that was it for us.

Sorry to ask such a basic question, but how can you tell if the FAFSA was selected for verification? We submitted the FAFSA without the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (not available yet) and we did not see anything on the SAR about verification. What does the request for verification look like? Thanks!

Didn’t intend to take this thread off topic, but the question did not seem to merit a new thread. Again, sorry!

I first heard about it when I called FAFSA for another reason. Then it was on the SAR on the FAFSA site, I believe.

I can’t verify through the IRS tool because while our taxes are filed, we owe a couple hundred dollars and it will be automatically sent from our account on April 15th. I also think this is a stopper for the transcript. I hope the schools don’t ask for it.

ON the SAR right below the EFC information:

“Your FAFSA has been selected for a review process called verification. Your school has the authority to request copies of certain financial documents from you and your parent(s).”

If you use the IRS Date Retrieval - it satisfies the requirement for verification (the same as if you send in a 2012 Tax Transcript). We were chosen for verficiation and have heard back from 2 schools thus far to send in the transcript. Both schools have verified we either need to update our FAFSA with the data retrieval tool, or send in the tax transcript.

We have completed our taxes - but due to certain forms we used, we had to paper file. We won’t be able to use the data retrieval tool or request a transcript for at least 6-8 weeks. This is all really a big pain in the rear!
