I'm looking at UPenn, Cornell and Georgetown but I feel like they would kind of suck socially. I'm wondering what the party scene is like at selective colleges not just those. I'm trying to decide if I should go to a more selective, prestigious school or go to like UCLA. Please help me out if you go to a selective college or did like an overnight visit or something thanks!

Selective colleges are not all equal, nor are selectiveness and a good social life mutually exclusive. UCLA is quite selective in itself. Why don’t you ask around in the specific forums of the schools you are interested in? An alternate option is asking current students you know or using a review site like uniggo

UPenn I’ve heard is actually comparatively more “social” than the other Ivies.

USC also comes to mind.

Given the OP’s username, perhaps s/he is concerned about too much partying being a negative point on the social scene?

Cornell and UPenn have significantly higher percentages of students in fraternities and sororities than UCLA does. This may mean a higher tendency to party and use recreational drugs, specifically alcohol. UCLA’s larger size does mean that the fraternity and sorority scene is large in an absolute sense, even though only about 13% of students participate.

Of course, UCLA is quite selective.

No, I’m looking for a good party scene.

I’ve heard that at more selective schools their students go freaking hard after they get done with their studies.

I talked to a Penn grad this weekend who described his college life as being in a “perpetually half-sober state.” Not nearly as good of a party scene as many state schools, but it’s not bad and it’s certainly the best among most “selective” colleges.

Definitely check out UVA or UNC Chapel Hill.

I go to Cornell, and there is definitely a very prevalent party scene. A lot of people are involved in Greek life and people go out to parties every night.

@Ranza123 I’m applying to Cornell and was wondering what you think about it. Academics, atmosphere, and is it as cold as everyone says it is?

I love Cornell. The academics are wonderful, the opportunities and networking is amazing, and I really feel like I’m getting a great education. The atmosphere is wonderful as well. I’m not a partier, but if you are, then there are plenty of parties to go to. I’ve lived in Ithaca my entire life, so I am very much used to the cold. Today the windchill got down to about 5 or 10 degrees. Last winter it got down to -25. But it’s still beautiful.

How about Michigan?

I kind of think you’re getting ahead of yourself here. If you want to “go to like UCLA”, keep in mind it has an acceptance rate of 18%. And all the others you’ve mentioned are even more selective. I would wait until you’ve actually gotten into these schools before deciding.
