I got email messages from two universities saying that they don't have a record of Selective Service Registration. Apparently this is needed for FA. Can someone please explain what this is and why it is needed? Thanks!

Every American and green card resident male who is 18 (or almost 18 actually) needs to register for the Selective Service in order to qualify for federal aid.

It’s very simple to do… click on the button that says “register online”

[Selective Service System: Welcome](http://www.sss.gov/)

Technically, you’re registering for the draft, but the US doesn’t use the draft anymore. But, it’s still necessary in case there ever was a WWWIII or something like that. The fed gov’t policy is that if you want federal aid, you must register if you’re male.

Even though there is no longer a draft all males need to register when they turn 18. It was a question on your FAFSA and most likely is what triggered the finaid office notification. You can easily do it on line. [Selective Service System: Welcome](http://www.sss.gov/) You will not qualify for any federal aid money if you are 18 and have not registered. You may have to go in and correct your FAFSA in order for them to prepared financial aid packages, but ask the finaid office at the colleges you applied if it’s necessary to do that or if they only need proof you registered.

Thanks moms. You are very helpful as usual. :)

Please do comply with the law – even if you don’t go to college. Failing to register has some long term consequences – for instance, if you have failed to register by the time you are 24 (or 26, can’t remember) then you might be excluded for consideration for future work that required government security clearances.

If you don’t like the law, please contact your congress person. But failing to comply can really mess up some things.

I completed this formality today and sent out copies of the registration. I really didn’t know this needed to be done. Turned 18 after applications were submitted.
