i remember seeing on some forms that i need to register for the draft in order to get financial aid, esp from the gov't. but my dad says i dont need to and a friend that i had asked said no but i want to be sure. i dont want to not register and not get any financial aid. so whats the deal with the draft? btw this is for california, but i think it's good info for everyone

All males aged 18 to 26 need to be registered with Selective Service before recieving federal student aid. If you aren't registered, it's ok, there's an option on the FAFSA to have your info sent to Selective Service.

All males that are US citizens are required to register with the Selective Service by their 18th birthday. It is not the draft, but a listing of available males. You are not required to serve in the military -- but you are required to register. It is the law and it is required to receive financial aid (they do ask on the FAFSA applciation and it is checked via your social security number).

It is easy to do online -- and can be done before you turn 18:

"Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It's important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth. Then, they would be examined for mental, physical and moral fitness by the military before being deferred or exempted from military service or inducted into the Armed Forces. "

So it is Completely OK to just let Fafsa Register you--on the application , and not do it yourself beforehand ? Is that what most College boys do, allow Fafsa to do it for them? Thank you

Yeah-- just answer "yes" even if you're not quite 18 yet. If you answer "no" it will hold up your application, and you'll have to correct it later to "yes."
