I've got a 2k scholarship from Geneseo and AD fram UMN, UDel suny-bing and Miami(OH). I have given up the last three since Miami is toooo expensive and UMN has better programs than UDel.

Now I ned to make decision between Geneseo and Minnesota. It seems UMN is more prestigious overall, but Geneseo is MUCH more selective than UMN...its average SAT is only a little bit lower than UMich but higher than UWisc. Geneseo seems the most selective public college in northeastern and top5 in the whole nation, but I do not know why, just because of low tuition?

Well, due to its higher average SAT and lower acceptance rate(35%),it may be harder to get good GPA and ranking in Geneseo. And with it less prestigious, may it be harder to get into a good grad school in Geneseo?

Geneseo(may study math or physics)
pros:
1.smaller size and nice town
2.more selective student body
3.costs 10k less/yaer

Cons
2.student-Faculty ratio is still public level, not higher than UMN
3.poor reputation outside NY

worries
1.how is math/pgysics in Geneseo?
2.how is the library in Geneseo?
3.how are the faculties?
4.there seems much more hader for international students to attend med school, right?
5.how is Geneseo regarded in MA?

UMN(may study applied math or civil engineering)
pros:
1.more prestigious
2.great programs

Cons
1.less selective
2.too many people
3.urban setting, but not too bad since it isnt in the downtown

PS:If study math, I wish I could get into a nice grad school to study biostatistics. How is this major? And which ungergrad college seems better to prepare?

I would NOT choose between the two schools based on SAT scores. The ACT is the test of choice in the Midwest; many excellent students going to the U of Minn don’t even bother with the SAT.

Check out the Department of Biological Statistics and Computational Biology at Cornell. I’m pretty sure it is based in the SUNY College of Ag. and Life Sciences there. If you dig through their profile, you should be able to find out what they require for graduate admissions. Starting out at SUNY-Geneseo, you may even be able to transfer there as an undergrad if you want to.

Minneapolis/St. Paul is a nice area. U-MINN is huge, but i would say on the whole has more prestige then any SUNY school in the thoughts of people from outside of NY. Keep in mind though, winters in the upper midwest can be brutal. I mean CCCCOLD!

I Know, but I do not care prestige in people’s thoughts. I want to know the prestige in colleges…and the role prestige palys in thansfering and grad school applying.

Geneseo’s ACT is higher than UMN too…but more selevtive brings what?? so called intelligent environment or just more competitive?

You raise an interesting question. Are you an international student?

What I would do to compare colleges is see you can find onine the syllabuses for first-year courses. Sometimes does better in revealing which college is more intellectually challenging than does the score range for each college.

The one HUGE regional difference between Minnesota and the northeast is that most Minnesota students take the SAT once, without test prep, as I did in my generation. New York students are MUCH more likely to take test prep courses, so much so that one Minnesota man I know who owns a test prep company has almost all of his clients in the northeast, and hardly any in his home town. So it may be that the New York colleges in general have students with higher scores, being more familiar with the test, but maybe not students who are any more likely to read for fun, or to ask intellectually curious questions in class, or whatever. Test scores are one way to compare colleges, but perhaps not the only way.
