Self-Plagarism

So i want to use and essay from my creative writing class in another writing class. The creative writing class paper is nearly 5 pages long whereas the other writing class a paper is an additional 4 pages (totaling to 9 pages for turn in in the new writing class). I have edited small parts of the old essay and added more sections in differing areas throughout the old essay. Would this be acceptable or is it bad? I am curious.

I am skeptical. I don’t think that you can get through university submitting the same paper over and over again. However, I think that you need to ask the professor.

I plagiarize myself sometimes on CC, but I am not being graded on it.

If the college has an honor code, what you propose would most likely be a violation of it.

IDK, back in the day I recycled my material a lot. Papers would become speeches and speeches would become papers. It’s my work. It’s impossible to actually plagiarize oneself.

Honor code may be different.

If your prof uses Turnitin or other digital submission site, it will probably get flagged as plagiarism. Best practice: talk to the professor and ask if you can revise the old work for this assignment. It’s conceivable that they will approve it in advance, and if not, then you don’t take the risk.

Before I read posts on CC, I never knew it could be a problem to reuse your own work!

You are lucky to know it now. Many people including professional researchers burned for this.
The idea is that, you are tying to get reward, either grade or research grant that are reserved for NEW work without doing the new work but pretending that you did.

Just as an update, it is a personal essay (no references or other items; it isn’t scientific or uses anything other than my own life) just a project that started in my creative writing class that i extended and continued in another writing class.

Talk to the professor to see if it acceptable. Sounds like you modified the original then added several more pages. If he/she says no, you have a chance to write something else. The term is quickly coming to an end.

Talk to the professor.

Fyi for grants and stuff, you can absolutely use your old work. You cite it. At least in history, public health, epid, sociology… I think those are the ones I’ve published in where we’ve cited our older papers.

Keep in mind the purpose of the class is not to just produce a paper, but to go through the exercise of writing/revising. That is how you learn.

I would talk to the professor and tell them that you have an existing paper on this topic but would like to expand upon it and would that be okay?
