Self-reporting scores on CommonApp

Is it necessary to self report scores on the CommonApp? Or will the official score-reports to colleges be enough?

The Common App asks you to list your scores, so list your scores.

“In addition to sending official score reports as required by colleges, do you wish to self-report scores or future test dates for any of the following standardized tests: ACT, SAT/SAT Subject, AP, IB, TOEFL, PTE Academic, and IELTS?”

Click “Yes.” It’s not a trick question.

It just seems…redundant. Thanks.

If you send an official score report, there is no need to list them on the common app, however, you can.

If you list all your scores–for different test administration dates of the SAT, for example, then it defeats the purpose of SCORE Choice, which allows you to pick and choose which scores (by test administration date) to send to colleges. So if you don’t do well on a particular section of a particular test administration, you won’t have to disclose it to the college (unless the college specifically asks for all scores from all test administration dates).

What if I did well on the ACT and do not want to “report” the SAT for colleges that allow scorechoice. Is it okay if I leave the SAT scores off of the CommonApp? (and send score reports only to the colleges that require ALL tests)

“In addition to sending official score reports as required by colleges, do you wish to self-report scores or future test dates for any of the following standardized tests: ACT, SAT/SAT Subject, AP, IB, TOEFL, PTE Academic, and IELTS?”
I haven’t seen the common application yet, but if the question is phrased as above, it allows you discretion as to which tests and scores you want to self-report. So I would answer Yes and then list the ACT score you wish to report. Of course, if you are applying to a college that does not allow score choice–(ie., requires submittal of all test scores for all tests), like Syracuse, for example, then you should list all the scores for only that school. You should look at the specific college website for the schools you are applying to and find out what that school’s policy/preference is for score reporting, in order for you to decide.

This is what most people do:

List AP scores only
Send official reports for SAT subject tests/SAT/ACT

Thanks, y’all. I’ve only got 1 ACT/SAT score, so I’m not in need of score choice.

It is up to you to self report scores or not. In any case, you need to submit the official score report. Some schools would even block off these sections when they download the CA. So just report whatever score as you want. Nevertheless, some schools may consider the self reported scores. For instance, Stanford asks for all scores but you may send in your best ACT single sitting score and self report other attempts if for a financial reason. Note that the CommonApp score self report is more or less like a superscoring report (i.e. section scores may be from different dates). Many schools do not superscore particularly for ACT. If submitted, the information may be used for the first reader initial screening. The admission will still rely on the official submission.
