Is it possible for me to pass the AP Art History exam if I start studying for it now? I am not aiming for a 4 or 5, but simply to pass the exam. I know it is possible to self-study for it, but I think I might be too late to do so.
I desperately need to know this because it’s one of the only ways I can fulfill the F requirement of the A-G for UC schools.
As for my ability to do this, I’m not sure. My previous AP scores: Calc 5, ELangAC 5, USH 3, Physics 4. I guess I’m “naturally” smart because I got all of those scores without studying, but at the same time I don’t have the best study habits, I’m just clever and can memorize decently. Perfect GPA same story.
Context to prove it’s an emergency and not a matter of my laziness: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/1740740-fulfilling-the-f-requirement-urgently-need-advice.html?new=1
You can start studying now as long as you’re willing to dedicate yourself and have the necessary materials (the textbook and prep book). I’ve never personally took it, but I’ve had some friends who have.
I recommend the “Annotated Mona Lisa” for a more concise prep book, or Barron’s for it’s overload of details (it’d be pretty good to supplement it too). Just remember this exam is more of identification (from what I’ve seen of the exam). And some application of “this artwork is from this period of time blah blah…”
I think a good majority BS off of the free response though haha.
You can find the released AP Art History Exam here:

To round up what I said, it’s probably best to get one of the prep books I said in addition to the textbook you have. Though it seems from what I’ve seen of the other thread you’ll be taking a class? Then, it’s still good to get a prep book xD. Be sure to practice released exams/free response though.
***By the way, you can try going onto coursera.com to find an online art course. Top universities offering free online, college courses. Some are quite specific in the art courses they teach though.
Good luck and best of studies!!!
Thank you so much for such an informative response! I /can/ take a class but I might be better off just self-studying it because it removes the obligation of submitting assignments and attending online sessions.
I will definitely be taking your advice if I decide to go through with this. Thank you, seriously
I was in your shoes last year! I used Barron’s + REA (+ Google images tbh) … pulled off a 5. It’s not absolutely necessary to take a class.
Really pay attention to the unique features, motifs, media, and time era of each piece of artwork you come across. Categorize them into possible long essay selections. Better now than the night before the exam, believe me.
