Self-study AP exams-- does it matter?

If I were to self-study for some AP exams, because they aren't offered to me, does this look good to colleges? I will be a senior when I do this so I won't get AP scores until next summer, but is there a spot where I can make it known on applications that I plan on doing my own independent study? Also, what are the awards people are talking about that you get for passing AP exams?

I would like to know as well. so bump

I would like to know this too, so busep (bump up someone else's post).

this isn't terribly helpful for seniors. Anyone can claim to be self-studying any AP subject at that point. It's very helpful if you will actually have a score when you apply.

Here's the stuff about AP Scholar awards.
