Is it worth it to self study an AP your senior year? I planned on self-studying AP Psychology because I took the class at a community college this summer. But I'd rather take it to show my mastery of the subject and add another positive factor to my application than use it to get out of a course.

Is it even a positive factor to your application if the school won't even know the score until you've been accepted or denied?

My school only offers four APs (US History, Bio, Calc AB, Calc BC (self-study with school)) so I thought going a little above and self-studying an AP would show a little more motivation...

AP’s are only for college credit and/or placement. Since your AP score won’t actually show up on your application, it probably won’t help that much anyway. Can you guess how many people will say that they’re going to take a bunch of AP exams in senior year, just to look better?

I’m doing it. I wish I had known last year that it was feasible to self-study though :(

I’m basically just doing what interests me, and I’m going to put on my EC list that I’m “Self studying for blah blah blah”. I’d imagine that colleges would look favorably on that, but it probably won’t really make much of a difference since they don’t really know how much you’re studying. I could flip through a textbook on a couple of Fridays and say I’m “self-studying”.

Yeah my main motivation is only to use it in applications. But thats kind of useless to do senior year when they won’t know what scores you’ll get or how much you are studying, as Randwulf said…

Lol. I also had no idea that you could self-study an AP, or even that fresh and soph. could take APs. Oh, CC has taught me so much in the last 7 months. xD
